Ho Spots on OBX?

Hi all,

Will be headed down to the Outerbanks this summer. Wondering if any fellow HOs had any thought of good spots for those with kids. Open to pretty much all cuisines and price points. Assuming bagels and pizza may not be NJ standard but happy to hear that as well!

Thanks!

do you have a kitchen? i’ve spent many months in OBX but rarely eat out there (the dining scene is pretty bad). generally hit up Austins market every day for whatever’s fresh. i have a few ideas if that’s not an option.

I had 3 weeklong stays in the Outer Banks between 2004 and 2010. We enjoyed 2 weeks in Duck at rentals with kitchens, and 1 week at a bed and breakfast in Corolla.

We ate lunch and dinner out most days, apart from a couple dinners cooked by my cousin at the house she rented.

We were happy with our meals. We mostly focused on seafood at relatively upscale restaurants.

I found one of my TripAdvisor reviews from 2010. We had enjoyed Mike Dianna’s Grill Room in Corolla. https://www.grillroomobx.com/

I remember one nice gourmet shop in Duck. I think it was Tommy’s. https://tommysmarketobx.com/

i’m always disappointed eating out here, but if you stick to simple, locally sourced dishes you might have a chance of satisfaction. here are some places that are better than the rest:

Blue Water Grill - basic. i like the chill, harbour views
Awful Arthurs - oysters only. avoid the restaurant, eat upstairs in the bar
Black Pelican - (crazy wait times for mediocre food) i only do takeout pizza from here, which is fine.
Front Porch - for locally roasted coffee beans
TRIO - probably the best wine, beer, and cheese selection in the area. not bad for a basic lunch. i’m here every other day.
Duck Donuts - sure, there are pretty good right out of the fryer, but only if you go at the crack of dawn (i won’t do lines)
Art’s Place - serviceable breakfast stuff
John’s Drive In - changed ownership, but haven’t seen a drop off in quality. i only get the dolphin sandwich here. best fish sandwich in the area.
1587 Restaurant - tries harder than most
Ocean Boulevard - i recall liking their crab bisque
Buxton Munch - decent fish tacos
The Saltbox - brunch
The Blue Point - if you’re up in Duck

It’s not the most interesting part of North Carolina for eating. We (in DC) always go to the mid-coast near Morehead City. But when in North Carolina, you need to eat biscuits, not bagels – bacon or sausage egg and cheese biscuits for breakfast. A highly regarded place on the outer banks is Biscuits and Porn. Really. You can also buy t-shirts and stuff that you’ll probably end up never wearing
I’m not sure which route you’re taking, but if you plan to stop in the Norfolk area, there are some opportunities in Norfolk.
