HO Flushing Food Crawl - Report and Discussion

I believe I was the one who chose the wrong pancake! Also, the Korean stall serving popcorn chicken with fresh grapes looked interesting…I guess the sweetness of the grape balances the saltiness of the chicken.

there were $3 peanut noodles everywhere, they all taste the same to me though the places making their own noodles are more interesting.

@Saregama discovered several hidden food courts, turns out a lot of storefronts on Roosevelt open into food courts of 4-6 stalls.

All of this makes me so jealous that I can’t be there!

When’s your next trip stateside?

Probably October.

Come earlier. It’s too cold for crawls in October.

Perfect fall weather. Message us or start a thread and we’ll do something!

Whatcha talkin bout Willis — fall is perfect nyc weather! Better than now for sure!

I love now!

Where are these photos from? Can’t seem to figure out from the thread what place it is.

Do note, @small_h, that although the noodles for luosifen (螺螄粉, snail rice noodles) are boiled in a stock that’s prepared by boiling snails, the dish as served offers no shellfish. You might still like them; I did.

I like noodles just fine, snails or no snails.

(Wonders idly whether the snails that she finds in her garden might be edible. Does not wonder about the slugs.)

I can see the restaurant names, do you have the premium @Saregama subscription?

ok, here’s my sense of it, starting at the top of the post:

  • dumpling soup - maxis noodle
  • deep fried skewers - kwafood
  • fluffy pancake - Yukun Shaobing (opposite korean fried chicken joint in the landmark quest mall)
  • samsa - tarim Uyghur
  • pork and chive dumplings/wontons - maybe @Saregama will recall

Interesting. Was there a distinct flavor (of snails – not that I know what that would be)?

I broadly endorse this, and I request that all of you who eat widely please post the addresses (if in a food court, the stall name and number, if possible) of the places at which you eat. Many of us live vicariously through you, and knowing where exactly you ate will enhance our illusion that we too have lives.

thanks so much!

it seems like we should have a taiwanese wheel cake in the back of landmark quest mall.

As I understand it, the notable aroma is due to fermented bamboo shoots.

People in this topic will enjoy this article about Flushing in the New Yorker.

No gift links at the NYer, sorry.

From that article: “Fifteen minutes later, I met up with two friends, Alex and Simon, at the New World Mall food court, … From a stall run by an enthusiastic thirty-year-old woman from Guilin, we ordered bowls of river-snail noodles. “If it doesn’t stink, it’s not fragrant! If it doesn’t make you believe it will taste bad, it won’t taste good!” she counselled us”
