I see that Mott 32 is now open at the former Momofuku location, and Charles was not exaggerating about the markup - charging double the price that nearby Moon Palace charges for similar dishes. $45 for Beef with Flat Rice Noodles! Mott 32 has a 'happy hour" menu now hmm might be worth a visit during the week for moi as a solo diner at times
Tempting. I wish they offered stuff at happy hour other than those last 2 spring rolls and fries. Those all seem like filler to me. Gotta meet that bottom line.
I would order the first 3.
A little bit better!
Not sure which thread to put this but The Moon at 165 York Blvd in Richmond Hill that opened not too long ago is already changing management. The manager at the former Golden Court restaurant has presently moved here and hired a new chef (dinner) and changing menu.
The ambience and decor of the place is way more appealing than the food…which was just middle-of-the-road okay! Went with a group weeks ago, afterwards, none made a re-visit.
For higher-end fine dining, better food elsewhere or nearby like Providential 9, Star-Chiva, The One Fusion, Skyview Fusion…etc
I agree it was below par and that’s why I said they are changing with new chef and transitioning the menu. We’ll see how effective this will be, but for now it’s too soon to tell.
We did go there for dim sum last weekend and it wasn’t good, but that’s not the same as dinner which is why I specified in my prior post that only the dinner part is changing.
Incidentally, we have a foodie friend whom we trust and they just went to Providential 9 for dinner and said it was terrible.
Ref: Providential 9
Most Interesting??!!
Our 2 meals in the past two weeks have ALL been excellent! The Thai Goby Fish, Roasted Sha-Tin style pigeons and the Rose essence soy free range chicken were outstanding.
Did your friend go on a busy weekend?
Actually, my in-laws will be having another dinner gathering there tomorrow. I’ll try to provide feedback on their meal!
Has any restaurant replaced Lai Wah Heen in Toronto? I had dim sum there a couple of times. Very nice, but expensive!
Moon Palace and Pearl Yorkville both offer a wide array of excellent Dim Sum creations. Decent price and pretty comfy and decent ambiance / decor
If you want a real splurge, give Mott 32 a try. Dim Sum at a way elevated and in some cases ’ ridiculous ’ price point served in a refined atmosphere! OK if one is on a company expense account!
The quality standard of dinner tonight was as good as before…albeit a touch expensive ( $70 pp ) since the menu included pre-ordered items like ’ Seafood Pouches ’ and Roasted Squab.
One down side was the restaurant is extremely under-staffed. Hence the wait time between dishes is longer than usual!
Otherwise, I cannot fault the meal! ( consensus amongst the 9 of us, including most who frequently visited and dined in fine dining establishments in Hong Kong and Mainland China are all positive )
We went to P9 a few days ago and it looks like our foodie friend probably went on a bad day because it wasn’t terrible. Can’t say it was excellent either, probably rank it about average. Menu was rather limited and many dishes had to be pre-ordered and since they don’t have the dine-in menu posted, that’s not convenient.
We first went to P9 when they first opened back just before the pandemic and we continued to go during the pandemic. Then their food started to waver as they experienced turnover of chefs and FOH staff and we stopped going. Hopefully they can make a comeback.
I agree they are understaffed. The manager who served us (whom we knew from Golden Court) was quite frazzled!
Not sure if already been posted but Auric King Chinese Restaurant has opened in Markville Mall. Haven’t been yet but a friend who just went for Dim Sum and said it’s expensive but otherwise quite good. Apparently line ups were VERY long, waiting up to an hour unless you have connections (which our friend did )
