Who knew?
The pun is common with fish & chips shops here. Many are owned by folk of Chinese heritage. Makes me wonder if there are any double puns in play, punning in both English and Cantonese.
By the by, the article mentions a London restaurant called Pearl Liang. It rings a bell with me - I think it used to be mentioned on Chowhound
Practically every business or restaurant name translated from English into Chinese in Singapore will have auspicious-sounding pseudo-homophones. Some were brilliant, some were tepid, whilst some were simply absurd. 
My personal favorite was this one, for Ali Baba Eating House. The Chinese words underneath said “Ah Lee Ba Ba Ee Ting Hau”, which seemed to be a loose phonetic translation of the English name, except that in Mandarin, it meant “Ali Baba is Definitely Good”!
