Back in the early 2010s, it seemed that every new restaurant opening in the city near to me was a gourmet burger place. It was a trend that quickly reached a peak and then faded. It was a trend that never really appealed to us. So, you might ask, why were we having dinner at the Beefy Boys, rather than one of hHereford’s other places. Well, the truth is we saw it on a TV programme and thought it looked quite good. It was the commitment to local Herefordshire beef (farm to fork miles – about 14) hung for a minimum of 21 days. And having their burger buns made by a local baker (food miles – about 13), rather than buying in a cheap product from the catering wholesaler.
There was a bit of a delay in taking orders but, once we were in the system, everything was fine. There’s an array of different burgers with toppings and a choice about how you want the burger itself – a single thick patty or two thin “smashed” ones. So that was one with bacon, dirty mayo, American cheese and beef dripping fried onions (the Dirty Boy burger) and the other with bacon, Swiss and American cheese, lettuce, red onion, gherkin and the house “special “ sauce (the Beefy Boy burger). The latter came with a “cheese skirt”, not something we’ve come across before, even on trips to the States. It’s a large thin disc of caramelised slightly crispy cheese, about twice the diameter of the patty, so you had to bite your way through it before getting to the meat… We shared a portion of fries and another of slaw.
This was decent nosh all round. Glad we went but I doubt we’d become regulars if we were locals. Nothing wrong with the place as such, just not our sort of place.
