I was looking at a menu for an upcoming trip to SF and saw the following…“Five percent charge added for San Francisco Employer Mandates.” With all of the talk of no-tipping and surcharges I want to make sure i understand the new running rules out there.
This is an old ‘law.’

Rules: some places add a surcharge ( basically as a protest, so diners can see the cost of a regulation ), some places don’t. The places that add the surcharge may or may not be obeying the law. You might see a “surprise surcharge” ( not noted on the menu ) and you can argue to have it taken off, I suppose.
I haven’t seen a surcharge on the bill in a while, but I’m eating mostly on the peninsula.
