Have you stopped buying Boar's Head products?

Just curious. I didn’t buy it often, but it was so widely available and not bad. I’m not going to buy the brand any longer since it sounds like there were sanitation problems even pre-listeria. It’s just as well. Processed meat products are one of my favorite food groups, but I’ve read that it isn’t great for you!

I have been holding off buying BH products (all) at the grocer and all retail shops that sell it or use the brand for prepared salads/sandwiches. It’s a shame but not worth the illness. More scrutiny and I’ll reconsider down the road. My workaround is to source roast beef, turkey breast and spiral ham brands and prepare them myself for slicing.

Never have bought Boar’s head for years, definitely won’t now. Don’t trust them whatever the product is and processed meats are not in general healthy foods.

I don’t buy much deli meat in general, but I do like Boar’s Head Genoa salami and purchase it fairly regularly (every couple of months). I bought (and ate) some recently, in fact, just before I heard about the sanitation issues. I’ll probably hold off buying more until they’ve had a chance to get their act together, but I’ll give them a second chance eventually.

This may be sacrilegious to some, but I’ve never though Boar’s Head products were very good. I was always puzzled that they were marketed and branded as a premium product.

Yes, I agree. I never bought them except when I was desperate for prepared sandwiches from close by delis when I was working on tight deadlines.

I’m very finicky about 'sliced deli" stuff - there are specific products - with zero regard to “brand” - that I/we like, and others never get bought a second time . . . .

note: good post for TLDR . . .

spinning back the clock . . . I did consulting work for many years. and I observed first hand / up close / totally uncomfortably . . . how ‘big corporations’ work.
the worst ever case observed . . . ‘corporate’ demanded local managers produce/meet financial goals, , , and ‘if you can’t, we’ll find somebody who can’

scenario: mail order business, ‘corporate edict’ - every in-basket must be empty at the end of the day. highly regulated industry - located ‘there’ for the abundance of licensed individuals available as a work force - - - retired individuals . . . they did their best, and went home at the end of their shift because . . . ‘just don’t need this horsesh#t/stupid job/stress’

so the manager, to meet the corp demand, was filmed on camera going desk to desk, taking all in-basket work to the shredder. bingo! metrics met, bonus ensues…
the customers? not so much - eventually the fact that buckets and buckets of “lost in the mail” orders had a issue . . . . .
oh yeah, manager not there no more . . . regulators had mega $$ ideas of fines , , , ,
'cusa, how stupid does a top site manager have to be to know “Smile, you’re on Camera?”

people are stupid. to wit: 400 new computers in the box stolen from the shipping dock. security video showed a security guard opening the doors - off hours - for thieves to steal the computers. the security guard work station? had multiple monitors showing everything the security camera were recording . . .

which is not far from identical to the Boar’s Head problem. management has the duty to know, they ignored that. things not working out for Boar’s Head - follow the news to see how many of the corporate suits get fired . . .

The entire report on BH gave me pause because most deli cases mix brands within the same refrigerated area. They share the same slicing machine. Even though I saw deli depts close, deep clean and restock I am staying away for now.

Half my family is Russian/Italian. We grew up in Italian and Jewish delis. I’ve seen plenty of recalls the last few years but this time it just seemed far more serious.

This is a food related comment. It sounds political; however, it applies to food.

Capitalism has advantages for innovation, consumers, and workers. Capitalism has many deficits that if not held in check via vigilante regulation promote exploitation and disadvantages for workers and consumers, including health risks for all.

Its a hard no for me.

If its going on at that plant, its going on to some degree at every plant. There’s always variation between plants, but the general tendencies dont change much.

Yes. In fact, I’ve stopped buying cold cuts altogether.

Anymore, I’ll just look for the raw meat i want for sandwiches on sale. On Sundays I make such things: a nice arm roast for roast beef, a ham for ham, pork roasts, etc. That way, when I get sick and die, I can blame me.

Not sure I ever purchased them. Wegmans back home has some wonderful cold cuts (roast beef, seasoned london broil, all kinds of ham & prociutti) that I never felt the need nor understood BH’s popularity :woman_shrugging:t3:

The only thing I purchased from them regularly was pepperoni for topping pizzas. We like/liked it. Not sure what to replace it with. I liked not only the flavor, but that I could slice to the the perfect thickness myself. Open to suggestions…

Our favorite. I buy six at a time and freeze.

This one too.

Looks like some Vermont items are carried by our local co-op. I’ll check it out - thanks!

Damn it, I forgot I like this too - the natural casing sticks. Will have to get my fix elsewhere for a while. Harumph.
