Gua bao @ Lan Jia, Taipei [Taiwan]

I’ve had gua bao several times in London. Usually from a stall at a food festival or a pop up. They have been a disappointment. The casing is too thick or dried out and the pork filling has been nothing to write home about. Not here though. The shell was thin and pillowy soft. I was offered lean or fatty pork and of course went for the fatty. In retrospect I should have gone half and half for some textural and flavour contrast. Really good sweet fatty pork but the peanut powder made everything a little too sweet for me. The pickled mustard greens did help cut through the richness.
