Grocery shopping in Ontario: a skyrocketing price thread

I know how you feel! I love Rittersport but they’ve become quite pricey and price reductions on them are few and far between.

I love how popular that chocolate is outside of Germany. It’s a beloved brand, but far from high-end. I guess the various editions help (I myself have a soft spot for the honey-salt almond, and my PIC loves the cornflakes one), plus nostalgia: we all grew up with it, and fancy-shmancy Lindt was out of our league at the time.

Yes, the different editions definitely keep it interesting. The bar is also small but reassuringly chunky.

The cornflake is one of my favourite flavours..

How long has there been a 7 day advisory for using opened refrigerated Egg Nog and Cream? I have had some cream go bad maybe 2 weeks after opening in the past year.

I didn’t ever have it happen before.

I just noticed the warning on the egg nog last night, and that egg nog has been open around 10 to 14 days. It looks and smells okay.

The cream has also been open in the fridge around 10 to 14 days. I guess I will start marking when I open them.

Interesting—I’ve never noticed that. I have a carton of whipping cream that I opened before Christmas, so I will check for that.

It does say ‘for optimal freshness’ rather than ‘do not consume’. If I have liquid dairy products open for more tham 7 days, I tend to use them up in pasta sauces, but I guess you can’t do that with eggnog!

I have had cream go moldy twice in the past year, after being open for 2 weeks, so I have become more cautious lately .

I hate when I have dumped some milk, cream, or sour cream into some good ingredients when I’m baking or cooking , or pouring milk/cream into a fresh cup of coffee, to then notice that the milk, cream or sour cream looks weird or moldy, then I end up tossing everything. LOL

I tossed the eggnog, but I’ll inspect my open table cream tonight.

I have added egg nog to my coffee in past years. I didn’t do it that much this winter because I’m watching that glucose number.

I finally remembered to check and mine does not have this message. It’s Neilson brand.

okay, thank you!

Here’s one going the other way : I picked up a large, fresh bunch of collard greens from Walmart for 40 cents today. The rainbow and green chard were the same.

I have to go to the Walmart Pharmacy tomorrow will check on the price. Love having some frozen to throw into soup.

I do not like Lindt at all.

:+1: …….Their Dark chocolate way too sweet!

Good news: we can all eat the chocolate we like the most, being adults n at.

I think it’s alright for mass-produced chocolate, but I don’t go out of my way to find it.

@thecharles which percentage? Have you tried the 100% cocoa?

For day to day consumption and enjoyment, I usually stick with those between 75-85%. Anything above, way too bitter as a snack.

I asked bc the 100% is likely not sweet at all. I don’t think I’ve gone above 85%, but it’s been too long for me to recall how sweet I found that one.
