The Genoa salami sold in vacuum packs at Newport is really good and cheaper than Brandt, Farm Boy, or other vacuum pack Genoa salamis I have purchased. $2.99 for a packet, around $29/ kg.
I will report on their presunto ham when I try it.
They also have a vacuum packed mixed cold cut packet that looks good, which is cheaper than the Italian style antipasto salami prosciutto mixed packs.
The prices of Grapefruit donât make any sense to me.
Earlier this year they were $5.99 for a 3lb bag (containing 5-6 depending on size). Those were Turkish. I anticipated some increase because of consumers boycotting US produce, although seasonally, Spanish citrus typically arrives early in the year â but NOT this year â didnât see any Spanish fruit (which is my favourite; Iâve always avoided Florida grapefruit anyway as itâs too sweet).
After a period when I saw US fruit being signed as South African (USA became RSA) that deception seems to have ceased. Also âbaggedâ grapefruit have disappeared from the stores.
The individual price was typically $1.49 each, which moved quickly to $1.79 and then $1.99 (to be fair they were larger than the bagged ones). Only Loblaws stayed the same â they started at $2.49 and are still at that price!
But a couple of days ago I hit C & C (Asian supermarket) and they were 3 for $1.99 (also Turkish).
Slightly smaller (although volume does increase exponentially with radius) â but at less than 30% of Loblaw price, I can live with that.
And thatâs probably the only correct use of âexponentialâ youâll see this year!!!
I bought 4 bags of Quaker Oats at $3.33 at Sobeys. I usually stock up on a few when theyâre on sale.
I donât have a good FreshCo location near me. I mostly buy butter and Palmolive at the College and Bathurst FreshCo, which I find okay but not great. I The produce is cheaper and better at nearby indie greengrocers in Kensington Market and Little Italy.
The new No Frills in Little Italy is pretty nice, especially considering how tiny it is.
I was at FoodBasics yesterday, a really disappointing location, which took over what had been a really nice A& P then Metro, in LdnOnt.
The Jell-O was a good price at 74 cents a pack. I left with 3 boxes Jell-O, some garbage bags and a bag of Amaretti cookies.
I wasnât impressed by the one FreshCo in London that took over a White Rose location in London. Iâve only been inside once.
I use the supermarket apps to some degree. I donât really plan my shipping around coupon clipping the way I once did. I like being surprised by bargains.
I havenât noticed that, but I only shop at various Foodlands when Iâm on a road trip or on the way home from my dogâs groomer.
The produce and baked goods at the Foodlands around southwestern Ontario seem to be better quality produce and baked goods, than what my 2 local and convenient London Sobeys offer.
I mostly shop at the Foodlands in Stratford, Lucan, Komoka, and Lambeth. I like that they still have cashiers and no self check-out. Iâm willing to pay 20 cents more per can of canned milk for that.
The large Loblaws near me has around 12 cashier lanes. There are times where no cashiers are working, and they expect everyone, even the 85 yos, to use self check-out. They do have a few security guards watching for theft, and a couple employees around to help customers with the self check-out.
Iâll check the price at Sobeys, Loblaws and Metro next time Iâm there. Itâs been costing $2.99 at Loblaws, Metro and Sobeys for 18 months, at least. They go on sale occasionally.
The price was $2.50 per can at my local London No Frills today.
Apparently the Foodland stores near Ottawa tend to be a little more expensive than the other chain stores since they are mostly in rural communities where they are the only grocer in town so they donât have any competition.
Metro and Loblaws have prices on their websites so you can compare prices from the comfort of your living room before you even leave the house.
I donât have the time or the energy to look at prices on websites ahead of time before shopping. I spend around 90 minutes prepping dinner and lunches for my DCs each day. Maybe 2 hours a day in the veg garden during the summer.
I donât find Foodland overpriced.
Mostly Iâm noting how much the canned milk is costing in London and area.
Manure, garden soil, and top soil was marked down to 99 cents a bag at the Sobeys in London, Ontario yesterday. I donât know if itâs marked down to 99 cents across Ontario, but itâs worth checking, if youâre still gardening.
