Happy Easter Charles! Thank you for your comments. I am also quite reluctant to dish out that much on something I may not like. Mr Leny and I have tried Persian food. We’ve liked some items, especially the bread but mostly I think it may not be our cup of tea.
I’m just super curious because Turkish food is really having a moment right now.
I find Turkish and Greek food have a lot more in common, than Turkish and Persian.
Persian food is quite distinct. I like it, but I’m not that familiar with it.
There are a lot of vegan Turkish dishes that should work for you.
I am happy more Turkish cafes, restaurants serving breakfasts, and patisseries have opened in TO.
I don’t really seek out kabobs and doner too often. (Too salty for me) They tend to be bang for the buck fast food. I’m not sure if any are made that carefully in the GTA.
The menu at Mangal Prime looks really good to me. Lots of mezes that are not currently available elsewhere in TO
One vegan main you might like is Imam Bayildi. I am surprised it isn’t offered at Mangal Prime.
It was the mezes that appealed to me since I try to eat vegan, as you remembered so well … thank you!
It would be great to have more casual cafes in RH … like Simit Chi. I love their vegan simit.
No worries about Mangal not offering Imam Bayildi. I’m not a huge eggplant fan.
We went to Mengal Prime about 2 weeks ago. We were a party of 4 and from my memory we ordered the Kabak Girit, Koz Patlican, Akdeniz Kirma Salad, KarisikIzgara (for 2), and the doner. None of our party have much of any experience with Turkish food but we all of us liked everything. Based on this experience, I personally prefer Mengal over Efendi.
We went on a Saturday and the restaurant was full which made the room quite loud. Staff there said it’s quieter on weekends when there are less people.
Thank you so much for the review. Would you go back? Probably Sunday would be more quiet.
Quick question … did the cold appetizers come with any bread?
Thank you Stevey for the intro! Pity you didn’t any photos?!
Sorry, I should’ve said should be more quiet on weekdays when there are less people. Sunday should be OK too since likely less people. It’s a large room with open ceilings like in a warehouse with exposed metal heating ventilation and maybe the noise is bouncing off the metal back down amplifying the noise.
And yes, it did come with a basket of bread, which was delicious! We finished it fast and the waitress gave us more.
Thank you … shame about the noise. Can’t wait to try the bread.
