Granada, Cordoba and Madrid trip

I’m in Granada, and both sleepy and happy. The trip from the airport to Atocha took about 30 minutes so I had plenty of time. Fun getting breakfast served to you on a train, even if I’m not really a breakfast eater. Got to my hotel to find that my room wasn’t ready so took a little stroll to get my bearings. And a couple beers. In both cases I was served tapas, unfortunately couldn’t eat either. The first was a wonderful smelling paella with meat. The second was an unappealing (to me) napkin with meat on it. Sent photos of both to LLD, telling him next time he might want to join me and eat all my freebies. I will try to keep up with food news here.

Looking forward to reliving my trip to Madrid environs and points south from many moons ago through your reports! (Granada! Cordoba! Sevilla! Take me back!)

Re the tapas – wonder if you mentioned tapa sin carne or something along those lines when you order your drink, if they might give you something you might be able to eat? Would be a pity if they had tortilla or other meatless snacks inside but are bringing you what they think is more “special” :woman_facepalming:t2:

Does he not want to travel to these places, or are these your special solo trips? I’d be excited about a double snack, but probably get too full too fast :joy:

We both kind of like our solo trips (he is doing a 3 week biking trip in Mallorca in May), but we’re also planning a trip together, now that Lulu is out of the house. The problem has been finding time.

I feel a little uncomfortable assuming I am going to get a free tapa, so not sure about suggesting it be meat free. Anyone more familiar with the culture have a suggestion?

I think it’s pretty standard, but you could also say that when they bring you something with meat (that way it also doesn’t go to waste)

Gorgeous. I loved the Alhambra. We had dinner in a neighborhood across the valley with a terrace facing the lit up structure. Should have gotten sunset too but the cab got lost on the way :joy: (Even the hotel we stayed at set the same mood – built over 15th century or something like that cloisters that had been preserved. Just wonderful.)

That sounds fabulous!

Just request a complimentary “tapa vegetariana, por favor”. Most places will accommodate.

Just to follow up on my recommendation of “grooved clams” at bar fm, I recommend the natural grooved wavy Venus clams “carneiros”. There are two types of wavy clams on the menu.

Went to Los Diamantes this evening for dinner. Their website said they are closed on Mondays, so I hadn’t planned on this, but walked by earlier in the day and they were hopping. Here’s the thing: I loved this so much that it may take over the rest of the Granada part of this trip report (although I do have that barFM reservation, which I’m not about to give up). Is it romantic? Fancy? Innovative? No, no, no. Brightly lit, shared tables, harried (but helpful and kind!) staff, and the door was standing open as the night chilled. Everything was great. I sat down and ordered a beer while looking at the menu. A hot plate of fried anchovies was put next to me. I was just about to order them! This freed me up to try somethlng else. People near me had a great looking and smelling plare, and said it was the langoustines pilpil. That decided one thing. Fried asparagus was the other. Oh, and bread to soak up the garlic butter in the pilpil. When I made the order the waiter said he wouldn’t serve me the bread because it was a day old. I ok’d his decision. Both dishes came, along with the bread. It was fine for sopping up the butter and I was happy. A few minutes later he brought out sauteed mushrooms (another thing I almost ordered) “to go with the bread.” Everything was delicious. Everyone there was happy. I will likely go back tomorrow.

The meal came to 33 euros. It was all delicious.

It really was.
In retrospect, I wish we had cut back days in Madrid and increased days elsewhere like Granada. We went to Segovia but skipped Toledo. I did extend Sevilla at the end, which was an excellent decision. Would happily have added even more days!

Oy. I am going to be drooling over your every post. And making some movements to make the “potential” trip in a few months “actualize” :joy:.

It worked! I asked for a glass of wine and mentioned I am a vegetarian, and he said “I will try” and then brought a salad!
