GOOD EATS NYC 2024 (A Blanket Thread)

Take a gander.
Or skip them and read her articles. About the same.

Is there something specific that you don’t like about them?

I have read her articles - this conversation began with me making a comment about one of them. I just don’t understand what you mean by

Simply put, I don’t trust her palate

Well, based on that article, I can certainly see why.

I was just thinking…. I need to get me a palate. :innocent: Maybe when we get back from Ireland where, by the way, I’ve had no chicken and only one meat dish. Man, do they do fresh seafood and fish. Too bad the potatoes offset the potential weight loss perk.

I was thinking that for myself as well, but I started small and got myself a plate. Makes a big difference to dining, let me tell you.

Get a palette. No one will know the difference.

I was in Dublin for a couple of weeks for work, I would have lost weight except my client kept buying rounds of beer and I kept drinking them. On Friday, we went to a pub for lunch with his team of bankers, I thought it odd he bought a round for the table. Around 1pm he bought another and I realized we weren’t going back to the office.

Turned into a very fattening afternoon and night.

Your quiet period is over? We can look forward to some eating adventures on your work travels?

Apologies for my poor communication, I was in Dublin almost 20 years ago and I retired about ten years ago, so no more work travels.

Would a pallet work?

Or a paletot?

Definitely! Very useful.

BAAZI

Have been meaning to go here for a while. This is what the Awadh folks opened, I believe (but they were thwarted by the pandemic and closed and reopened again some time later).

Plan was actually to go to Lungi, but turns out they are closed on Tuesdays, go figure. Glad we ended up here, though.

Lovely room, delicious food (phew), great cocktails! We’ll be back.

There was a fun amuse bouche of a single pani puri served as a shot glass of the spiced water with the crunchy ball of a puri with a bit of the usual stuffing on top.

We had Kurkuri bhindi (crunchy okra “fries”)to start with our drinks, and then asked them to bring out everything either together or as it was ready, which worked out nicely as a we got a mix of kebabs and mains in alternating order.

.

Goat Galauti Kabab – this was the real deal, just lovely. Soft as butter, perfectly spiced, and served with a buttered rumali roti (which I suspect was from frozen, but I don’t care, the kabab was perfect).

.

Amritsari Fish – my friend insisted on this, so we got it. It’s basically a well-spiced fish pakoda, This was well-made and well-flavored for what it was. The reason I don’t love the dish is the oily chickpea batter. But it was tasty.

.

Chicken Tawa Seekh – this was the weakest of the kababs, probably because they took a perfectly good chicken seekh kabab and then doused it in what I am guessing was thick dal and an even thicker coating of Amul cheese.

.

Goat Bihari – this was nicely made goat curry, well-balanced in flavors and the goat was tender. Tiny portion thought.

.

Fish Pollichattu – banana leaf wrapped fish in a spice paste, served with tempered rice and potato. The only composed dish. It was delicious!

.

Dessert was the Big Dud of the night – one of my friends looked at the dish, looked up at the server, and said in complete shock – ONE gulab jamun??? Lol.

The only negative (other than the gulab jamun) was the service.

It’s a small place and there are 2 servers and 1 helper, but the servers were completely inattentive to everyone :woman_facepalming:t2:.

At one point we had drinks, bhindi, but still no water despite having asked for it 4 times. Another table got up and went to the bar to order drinks and food after waiting for ages. My friend had to get up and get a second round of drinks from the bar because no one looked like they were coming by ever again to ask.

But I’ll take good food and bad service over the inverse.

I wonder if they’re on to something with that pani puri, pair alcohol and fillings in a cocktail bar setting…
