I was on a kick to visit some favorites I hadn’t been to in a very long time.
The top success story is not only the best of the lot, but one of the finest items you can eat in the DC area. Worth traveling around the beltway for, certainly, and also traveling from other cities.
You can easily spot the smoke pouring out of Just Jerk. They really are experts at smoking chicken. It is carry-out only. I felt free to take advantage of the communal seating at Union Market about 20 minutes away where there is free parking for the first three hours - not just the surface lot but all the garage parking too.
We ordered a quarter dark spicy and a quarter dark mild. There have been times when the spicy was enough to blow your head off, so we hedged our bets.
I first tore into the spicy, and it was amazing. I almost couldn’t believe how great it was. Not too spicy. I thought at this point life could not get any better.
Then we tried the mild, and holy crap this was transcendent. Thick with spices. It tasted really of the island. I had just eaten the crazy-great spicy version, yet this was even better.
For the record, another success was the corned beef sandwich at Deli City. This got inhaled. Where did it go? It’s hard to be jealous of anyone else’s corned beef after this.
A mild disappointment was the fatty brisket with gravy at MGM Roast Beef. Still delicious, but not euphoric. It was not fatty and also served more in chunks than slices.
