“ Glass Kitchen, Commerce Gate & Hwy#7, Thornhill ) - Visually appealing and gorgeously plated food that sadly underwhelms and disappoints in taste!

The arrival of our array of humble luncheon choices, delivered to our table by a warm, friendly and attentive lady server, came as a huge surprise. None of us was expecting such visually appealing and artfully plated dishes! The sight brought high hopes of the taste to come. Despite the fact that the creative looking dishes and this Asian /Western fusion restaurant is the brainchild of a popular, award winning chef - Keith Pears ( Bocuse d’Or fame ) . The outcome of the food was sadly underwhelming and disappointing. When the only items worth mentioning from our 5 courses were just ‘ hash brown fried potatoes and butter scones ‘, we know there’s something lacking with the interpretation of the chef’s creation and subsequent execution by the kitchen. It also sends a signal that a return visit to this place will definitely won’t be in our future plans!

The ultra crispy and airy interior of those well seasoned hash brown potato cubes were indeed delectable and enjoyable. Such quality rendition, rarely encountered. So were the aromatic, buttery and light, freshly baked scones my wife ordered. However, the braised beef short ribs of my Bennies were stingy, dry and bland in taste. The Shrimp and Grits, super heavy and greasy and a potential artery clotting health trap! The Lamb skewer looked good but tasted mediocre. Both the unorthodox crunchy coating and funky berry dip, hit and miss. A tiny dollop of peanut satay dipping sauce on the side was perfect but sadly the quantity was abysmal and its presence was only for decorative purposes only!

What a pity the key taste component turned out to be a disappointment and did not reflect on the otherwise near-perfect elements of decor, ambience, service and value.

I was interested in this but when I learnt he was not in the kitchen but preparing for the Americas competition, I decided to delay. He got silver and will be going to the final next year.

Anyone know of any Canadian representatives over the years that went on to run their own notable restaurants?
