I’m way too pessimistic to buy the idea that this will help slow the rate of climate change, but it’s good not to add unnecessarily-wasted paper to the garbage stream.
I have known about this for years, if you want to feel like Einstein, stand at the condiment station at your local fast food place and do this. Wait til you see the crowds you attract with the awe of your innovation.
There is a similar “trick” with Chinese to go food containers, they unfold into plates.

Bah. I easily use two of those cups for a large order of fries. I need them BECAUSE I LIKE KETCHUP.
