Francesinha, Bifana and tripe in [Porto, Portugal]

Which restaurants and cafés would you recommend for Francesinha and Bifana in Porto? My friend is currently in Porto.

I recommended Scarlett at the Hotel Infante Sagres, which is a smaller and somewhat fancy Francesinha than a typical Francesinha.

Which restaurants do you recommend for tripe?

Thanks for any recommendations.

Not a local but we loved the Bifana at Congo.

Francesinha at Cafe Santiago was good but locals would probably send you to Lado B or Brasão. Maybe someone can attest

Thank you!

A local, Helena Fátima, who posts on the travel boards, Fodor´s, Rick Steves and TA, says that the best Francesinha would be found at Santiago, Lado B or Brasão. I keep Helena’s excellent Porto suggestions in my Porto file.

Thank you so much, Maribel.

Your friend is very lucky to be staying at such a lovely, beautifully decorated and historic hotel, the Infante Sagres, Porto’s original “Grande Dame”! It was taken over by Hospes from Taylor Fladgate last year, and I see that they have kept the stylish Vogue Café.

Sorry I can’t help personally with tripe because I don’t eat it, which is a shame, because I live in Madrid, and it’s a quintessential Madrileño dish!

But, Culinary Backstreets, which runs Porto food tours, recommends the following:

Thank you, again!

I ate a Lado B a couple of weeks ago when I was in Porto. I have nothing to compare it to, but I really appreciated the option that I could order a half Francesinha. It was indeed delicious, and a plenty big portion for me.

That’s great that they offer a half portion.

I ordered a small French Onion soup and a small chocolate mousse last time I was Geneva, and I appreciated the option. European restaurants offer a lot of options I wish were available more frequently in the States and in Canada.
