Claus, that may happen. I have a friend who was born WITHOUT a sense of smell and taste. In adulthood he went through sensory therapy and surgery and now has a fair range of the taste basics; sweet, sour, salty. Bitter, spicy and umami are being worked on. His scent receptors are improving, too. He now can tell if someone has broken wind in his presence.
Here, here on tripe. Ick. Same with sweetbreads, brains, any kinda liver, heart, chicaharrones, tounge. No rumaki for me. This aversion is left over from childhood, being dragged kicking and screaming to Le Petit Something for a fancy, schmancy dinner. Us kids should have been left at home with a babysitter and a Swanson’s TV dinner. I’m sure the folks would have had a finer dining experience without us!
Nothing wrong with MW popcorn IF you are using a device meant for such use. Those bags OTOH, ick.
The only microwave popcorn I can stand is 365 from Whole Foods; does not have that awful smell.
Interesting - I would love to hear more! I don’t have a sense of smell, but I do have a sense of taste. Not sure whether I was born without the sense of smell or lost it in childhood (I did break my nose as a toddler), but none of the ENTs I have spoken with about it have given me much hope of any type of treatment that could help. I don’t know what I’m missing so I don’t find it that limiting (in fact, I refer to NOT being able to tell whether someone has broken wind in my presence as my superpower, LOL), but it would be nice to have it fixed to the extent possible just so I don’t have to rely on my husband to tell me if the milk has gone off!
I invested in a microwave popcorn popper.Add popcorn kernels, no fuss(except for unpopped kernels), no muss.
We have an old Orville Redenbacher popper for the microwave. I use corn kernels, olive oil and salt.
Sweetbreads don’t have a strong taste. I can understand not liking the idea of sweetbreads.
If a sweetbread was battered, fried and tossed into a bucket of fried chicken, I don’t think too many people who ate it unintentionally would gag on the flavour.
This happened to me when I had multiple sinus infections that never cleared up completely.
It was weird not being able to smell foods yet enjoying the taste of all foods.
It probably was the sauce it was smothered in. Something creamy and French and with mushrooms was most likely the proboem for me. I wouldn’t eat mushrooms until I was an adult and cream sauces were out, too.
I had sweetbreads for the first time at the tender age of 12. It was love at first sight, altho I do not remember how they were prepared.
Mushrooms & cream sauce sounds faboski
I don’t know how I missed this. Really, I’m usually a very tolerent person yet not liking vanilla ice cream ?
I’m not sure but that may be grounds to unfollow you !
LOL! Loved that!
Caraway seeds for me. I loves me some rye bread, but sans those dang seeds. LOVE sesame, poppy, HATE caraway.
+1 HATED them as a kid. Now that I know how to make them, can’t live without them. Agree on the stock tip, too.
@DaBadger Welcome ! Nice to see you here.
I’ve mentioned caraway seeds. Like some, raw shredded coconut doesn’t work for me.
Growing up, cilantro was soap to my mouth. Moved to Ecuador and can’t live without it, now. I cook for many folks who do despise it. When I make a salsa for tortilla chip dippin’, I’ll use celery, greens if possible, when I blend it up, instead of cilantro. Just gives that little sharp note cilantro does.
Dill belongs in pickle jars, not in sauces/creams, IMHO. Hate it when I go out for fish and expect the usual tartar sauce (mayo/relish) and it’s creamy dill, or dill mayo.
Had uni a few times. Reminded my of the Playdoe diet I was on as a kid.
First time I ever tasted yucca was in a soup in Quito. I didn’t know what to do with that lump in the middle of the bowl, so I observed some folks consume it. Got it down, and couldn’t stand it, but acted like I liked it. Never insult the cook, specially a grandma cook. Well, they saw my reaction and concluded I liked it, so I got more frickin’ yucca than I had ever hoped. Finally, the grandma said, “you don’t really like yucca, do you.” I was like, “maybe not.” They spared me the yucca thereafter. Uff!
First time I tasted a tomatillo based sauce, I was kind of confused. Very bright, but not as acidic as lime. I now use them all the time.
Hate kale, too. Thud!
Sounds like you had old uni - for uni it is important to have it really fresh, than it taste fantastic but it can get pretty bad quite fast
I find it to be a waste of calories for me, and I’m already overweight, so no point eating something caloric I don’t enjoy.
It’s not that I hate it, but I don’t enjoy it or miss it.
Most of my friends like that I don’t do whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, because I give it to them when we share desserts!
I’ve had sea urchin 20 minutes after it was caught by my cousin in Greece. Not a fan. Also don’t like sea barnacles.
That said, I try almost anything once, and sometimes 2 or 3 times.
I’m the polar opposite as I love them in rye bread.
