Will you buy these again?
Were they worth the hassle?
Not for a while. They ain’t cheap, for starters: $27 for what turned out to be two servings. Which, I mean, way cheaper than at a sushi bar, but I usually don’t spend that much on my home-cooked meals.
They might be the next time, now that I know what I’m in for. The hassle will be amortized.
Butter garlic would be good
As I was thinking about this, it struck me that cleaning shrimp is not much better, possibly worse.
I really enjoyed these when I had them last spring/summer. Really sweet and tender. The plucking the eye out was probably the worst part of the cleaning for me, but even then it wasn’t bad. I generally like to get calamari that is partially cleaned. This is one of the few foods that I do like to have prepped as much by others as possible (frog being another!).
For whatever reason, cleaning shrimp does not bother me in the least. Removing the shrimp vein is akin to removing the squid cartilage, but the latter proved a lot trickier. And shrimp does not come apart on you, as firefly squid does, which skeeved me.
I just saw this on TV and thought it might appeal to you; perhaps with regular calamari: https://patijinich.com/grilled-calamari-radicchio-and-endive-salad/
You could make the vegetable escabèche part and then stir in your already prepared squid and let them marry for a little bit. This would be great with some baguette.
