Film Craft Truck Food

If you have worked on a movie or TV show you’re familiar with the craft food truck. What’s the best thing you have eaten on set? Asking for a friend

My experience is solely music videos and filmed concerts.
There are two departments: crafty and catering. Crafty takes care of snacks (packaged foods), water, soda, fresh fruit, booze through out the day (and things can get pretty extravagant on some large projects. Ie: lobster, head chefs, high end bbq).

Catering is usually buffet style that consists of a fish, steak, chicken, and veggie option. Think wedding buffet style food. Again, bigger budgets can mean much fancier meals prepared on site but communal dining.

More recently, Craft trucks, offer varied finger foods (a taco, fish chips, pizza slices, bbq, burgers, etc).

Feeding crew daily is essential (even if you aren’t getting paid) but it’s nothing to write home about until the wrap party.

Best thing I ever ate was bbq in Memphis, 3 day concert film when Bruce Hornsby was gigging with The Grateful Dead.

Funny, when I read the original post, I thought to myself “Rooster is probably the only Onion I know that could have some fun insight” and you did not disappoint. Oh, the stories you could tell!

Ha! I hope I’m not the only one! I enjoy the work stories equally!

was this 1990ish?

in 1990 i saw Hornsby play in Amsterdam after which he played with the Grateful Dead for the rest of their Europe tour.

didn’t get backstage (but friends did), but the food in Germany, Paris and London was great.

Nephew is a cinematographer and reckons set food is universally poor. He’s recently done a couple of two week long gigs in Saudi Arabia. He regularly sent photos of the food - it was always brown gloop, three meals a day.

Out of my bedroom window. Summer of 2002 filming. Looks like a salad on that tray. Healthy! :joy:

Can anyone guess the movie? it wasn’t particularly well-received, but its fantasy became reality 6 years later.

Fun pictures! Which film?

Head of State.

Ugh, that’s infuriating to read.

In Japan, such food is known as “ロケ弁”/“rokeben” a bastardization of “location bento”. They are almost always bento boxes. Here’s a 2015 photo ranking with Japanese descriptions of the top 10 in Japan. Prices are likely MUCH higher now…if the catering companies are still even in business!

FYI on my first day of being on set of a major Netflix movie there were 2 classes of food The SAG food & non SAG food. The union people were fed well, freshly delivered fruits, vegetables and choices of meat chicken, fish or vegan.and choice of pies
Non SAG had warmed over chicken, catfish or vegan a crappy salad and cake. Soda, Gatorade and water and pretzels all were readily available.
Definitely a 2 perhaps a 3 class system because the “ stars” were fed in their trailers.

Craft truck update Peacock Network put Netflix to shame today’s shoot served fresh scrambled eggs and sausage and oatmeal and fresh fruit and good bagels and many different cream cheeses. Fresh muffins, juices and really good coffee
Snacks & drinks all day
Lunch was a roasted chicken or vegan meal good sides and desserts like a Viennese table at a wedding.
The shoot itself was uneventful but I sure did enjoy the food, yay Peacock a streaming service that I don’t subscribe to…yet
