[Filey, North Yorkshire] Brown Room

“Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside. I do like to be beside the sea”.

A town centre chippy with cafe. As fish & chip aficionados will know, the country is divided into regions favouring cod and those favouring haddock. North Yorkshire is definitely haddock country. It comes as a large fillet, perfectly fried, with a lovely crisp batter. Chips are a generous portion (and couldn’t be finished by one of us) and were spot-on for texture, only needing a liberal dose of malt vinegar.

As a proud Cestrian, it grieves me to say this, but Yorkshire fish and chips are generally better than on the western side of the Pennines. And this is a fine example.

Filey Bay was the location of a naval battle on 23 September 1779. A small flotilla of four French and American ships attacked a large convoy of British cargo ships, escorted by two Royal Navy vessels.
