Festive dinner for 10 [Beacon Hill; Kendall Sq]

B has been partly put in charge of planning an end-of-year dinner for the current class of residents tomorrow (Thursday) for a group of ~10. He asked me a few days ago and I suggested Sumiao. He and his cohorts said it looked great…and they’re booked. I thought of Moëca but he was unsure if people wanted to trek to Harvard Sq (they are all at MGH). Is Peregrine too small to consider (if they even have openings)? I remember the former joint and it was tiny. Is there anything else good (and not Scampo) around Beacon Hill? What’s 1928 Beacon Hill? Is Bin 26 still a nice to go? And it must be accessible—one of the attendees is in a wheelchair.

I’ve been so busy with work that I haven’t bern able to catch up with B; for all I know, they may have found a spot. What happened to the days when you got taken out to Harvard Gardens and you’d be happy with that??

Alcove?

Also, if convenience is a primary factor, while the menu isn’t super inspiring, you could do worse than 75 Chestnut for this type of thing.

I thought of Alcove but I can’t remember if it’s accessible since on that lower level. I’ll check. TY.

I can’t believe 75 Chestnut is still around! At this late notice, they’ll be lucky if they can get into a McDonald’s.

Bambara at the Kimpton Marlowe might work.

Pergrine has a lovely internal terrace that could accomodate the group, weather permitting.

I just called Peregrine 1 hour ago and they could accommodate them and are accessible. Unfortunately, the other organizer made other plans. I think they’re going to Seoul on Cambridge St. Oh well, I tried. Now I want to visit. Everything on the menu sounds scrumptious. Thanks everyone for chiming in. I’ll ask B for a report tomorrow.

Brunch at Peregrine is especially civilized

You know me too well—you know how much I love brunch (not!).

I had a company/team dinner at Glass House pre-pandemic, and we really had a great time there. While the menu isn’t really exotic, it has something for most people and the food was pretty good. The space though was open and easily accessible, and the staff then were actually really accommodating. We stayed well after our dinner and hung out to enjoy coffee and desserts, and the staff never rushed us.

I think I’ve been there twice, once right after the pandemic and another time not long after. I want to like that place (nice atmosphere) but sadly, we’ve had mediocre food. Maybe we should try again (we’re planning another visit soon to the MIT Museum).

If you’ve had more recent experience, go with that. It’s been too long for me to say if it’s still good. Everyone enjoyed their food that evening, even if it wasn’t spectacular.

I just checked in with B. They are at Harvard Gardens

After being in the Boston area for college leaving 1977, I returned in 1989. I have never been to Harvard Gardens and in fact have made active attempts to avoid it. Maybe I should try it once just for the experience. However, with the entire outgoing residency cohort being away from MGH all at the same time for a gathering, I do understand why proximity is more important than anything else.

It was decades ago when I experienced through my significant other the outgoing internal medicine residency cohort finishing New Haven in June 1989. That was then (beepers, beepers, being handed to interns), this is now. However, some things the same.

Sending best wishes to all involved!

Not surprising. My experience is that in any sizable cohort, the number of members who want to spend as little as possible is greater than the number of foodies.

Well, 10 was more like 6 total and honestly, it sounds like Harvard Gardens was the perfect venue for them. They’re a pretty sophisticated crew but all they wanted to do at the end of the day was to have burgers and beer and share stories and laughs about the past year. Funnily enough, there was another attending taking out his residents at the same time, so they joined forces. B had a blast (and he said the burger was pretty good).

BTW @Madrid, the residents don’t go out en masse at the same time. Man’s Greatest Hospital would shut down, otherwise!

Nothing wrong with a decent burger and a cold beer. Glad they had fun.

They used to pour a large, stiff cocktail at Harvard Gardens. Nothing wrong with that either big it is still the case.

I know two people who met their spouses at Harvard Gardens.
