My favourites to order at a restaurant include borscht, goulash soup, French onion soup, Manhattan clam chowder, New England Clam Chowder, Tom Kha Gai, and French Onion Soup.
Apart from Borscht, which I make a couple times a month, I don’t usually make these soups at home.
Not sure if it counts, but I love to order New England Oyster Stew. My Dad used to make it for us in the winter and taught me the basic recipe but it is always fun to try it in a restaurant.
I also like wonton soup, with or without noodles. Not sure if the noodles are legit, but XO Taste in Falls Church (closed now, unfortunately) used to have a wonton soup with noodles that I really liked. But having looked up the wor wonton soup Ernie mentioned, I think that will be the next soup I am going to order.
If I am ordering soup at a restaurant, I usually went to that restaurant for the soup, like pho, ramen, or udon. I think cream-based soups are also safe bets if I trust the restaurant. In my experience, a spontaneous brothy soup order has usually been a disappointment.
le bonne soup in nyc used to make a a tomato soup — forget exactly what they called it — it was pureed, and i think there was a bit of dairy. but, it’s been a good long while since it’s been on the menu. thankfully, their french onion still is!
