Have tried lots of places, tai pan is my favorite, especially if they are warm out of the oven. here are a couple of posts from reddit worth reading where the author set out to try every egg tart in Manhattan’s Chinatown:
Xin Fa Bakery in Brooklyn’s Chinatown. Lines snaking outside sometimes mainly for the egg tarts. They sell so many of them that they are often too hot to fully enjoy. I think I even prefer them over Pastéis de Belém where they were invented
Had these twice now, I know people love them but not my jam, imo the custard to crust ratio is way too high . Perhaps I’m wrong but seems like yet another attempt to supersize a dish for American palates.
IIRC, Chinese KFCs’ would periodically whup out different egg tarts. I liked the blueberry one (which may have been 2010), but I’ve also seen ones with other berries, and durian.
If this Eurasian pastry ever gets the bastardization – i.e. social media – treatment, what horrors might follow? I apprehensively submit that a pecan pie crust egg tart would be choice.
my favorite, tai pan, in nyc’s chinatown, has egg white, papaya, and green tea. Not sure if those flavors are on offer in their Hong Kong bakeries.
Years ago, a young couple opened a portugese bakery near our town in northern Westchester, my favorite was a cookie crust tart, which I haven’t seen anywhere else. Sadly, despite many of us trying to support the bakery through word of mouth and catering, they eventually closed.
