I can’t take the credit for the photos. Those were taken by my husband. I have no idea what lens or settings he used, but he does have an old-school Canon Rebel. I can ask him later.
I loved your trip report! Has your son read Odder? My kids loved it. You got off easy with traffic - a friend. Who was in NH had a 14 hour drive to Boston.
He hasn’t—I’ve requested it from our library system. Looking forward to reading it myself.
Stowe was featured in the latest installment of NYT 36 Hours.
Interesting read, but for anyone stumbling on this thread in the future, grains of salt as with any media guide like this, even from the NYT these days. I find the 36 hours pieces always to be reaching a bit to satisfy the construct. There are some decent recommendations (a few already referenced in this thread), and always some head scratchers.
Alpine Hall is the worst version of a hotel restaurant, middling food with $$$$ prices. It’s a shame there are so few dining options right at the mountain and this is one of them. We’ve stayed at the lodge and didn’t even bother with the “free” breakfast at Alpine Hall by the 2nd morning. Whistling Pig Pavilion has a nice location and atmosphere, but Imma pass on $20+ cocktails served in a plastic cup. A more interesting option at the mountain is the Linehouse, which is a hidden bar under the Spruce Peak plaza, While it is pricy as well, they at least know how to make a cocktail.
Plate is one of the better spots in the area. They have maybe the best veggie burger I have ever had. Starter portions are insultingly minuscule and not sharable though.
Idletyme replaced the best long time spot on mountain road (The Shed), and not for the better.
