Eats from quick 1.5 day LA trip

Because our Disneyland/ LA trip was short, and we also spent time visiting relatives we hadn’t seen for a while, I didn’t spent a single minute planning the eats in LA until we were already in LA.

First meal out, pinsas from Oste. Before people freaked out about takeout pizzas, just know that it was a long wait for a table, so we ordered ahead and immediately ate the pinsas in the car after pickup. They were fabulous pinsas/ pizzas. The crispy crust made with wheat and rice flour was delectable.

Carbonara: Wife liked the carbonara more. In truth it didn’t taste much like carbonara the pasta but it didn’t need to, for me. Just a great pizza. Guanciale, applewood bacon, pecorino romano, black pepper, egg.

Oste: I liked Oste more. Mozzarella, pecorino, red onions, guanciale, rosemary.

I had them cold for two breakfasts after and they were still great.

Stopped by Row DTLA. Originally was planning to eat elsewhere but saw Pizzeria Bianco. Given the Bianco hype, we felt obligated to try the pizza.

The antipasto was ok. I was a bit surprised by the plate that the antipasto sits on- Heath Ceramics plate with an unglazed edge. How we knew? We had the same plates at home.

Hopefully people don’t break their plates often.

The magherita. It was pretty good. We just had Tony’s magherita a few weeks ago in SF. Bianco’s good tomato sauce was a tiny bit salty and off balanced compared to Tony’s perfection. The crust was good but again a little bit short of Tony’s great crust.

Get whole pies at Bianco, or get the slices from Pane Bianco on the next row.

Since we didn’t make any reservations ahead of time, we stopped by the Culver City location of Pasta Sisters to grab some pastas. Thankfully we showed up just before the crowd descended.

The clam spaghetti. I liked this one the most. Liberal sprinkling of pepper did the job.

Three cheese tagliatelle. Its fine.

Pesto gnocchi. Pesto sauce was nice. I think we would have generally preferred the al dente texture of any of the noodles than the gnocchis.

The bottarga spaghetti. Briny goodness. Would be nice if they added twice as much of the roes.

Butter lettuce salad. Its ok. Its not called Salad Sisters for a reason.

Overall some pretty decent pastas at a good price without having to fight for reservations on New Year’s Eve.

Lunch before leaving LA on New Year Days mean fewer choices than usual. We were thinking about Komal but the Mercado was closed. So Guisados near Echo Park was the choice.

We ordered just about all the topping choices. Overall the tacos were quite solid- an enjoyable last meal in LA. We also got 4 tamales to go- puerco, pollo, elotes and queso. Just ate the first two tonight at home and they were good tamales, on the saucy side.

Patio in the back. But we were wimps and sat inside since we didn’t want to freeze our butts off in LA. Ok, its only a bit chilly but we were expecting warming days in LA…

Speaking of Mexico City style blue corn quesadillas that we didn’t get to eat at Komal, we headed north on Sunset after Guisados to get to I5 and passed by the Echo Park quesadilla lady location that we grabbed food from 5 years ago. She wasn’t there on NYD but I thought there’s still some distance between the blue corn quesadillas that we got from Mexico City (e.g. Doña Anastasia’s many years ago- that was heavenly. It was always a major regret that between the two of us that we only managed to eat one quesadilla there after a very full breakfast at an fonda. And Anastasia looked disappointed that we got only one and thought we didn’t like it. NO!) and the Echo Park version, which we grabbed five but didnt love.

How’s Komal’s?
