You and all the rest of us starving students on the weekends! Pizza provided some valuable nutrition (carb, pro, fat, some vits and minerals) and the beers we washed it down with gave us more carb, vits and minerals). Ah, those were the days and nights!
Potato chips, Fritos, Cheez-Its, cashews or pistachios…all at-home Scooby Snacks, as I’m not usually sitting at a bar drinking at the age of 65.
When I was a younger drunk (Army days), the Steak-And-Egg Kitchen really set me to rights.
A thin-ish steak with 2 or 3 eggs plus some kind of taters (usu hashbrowns) would set me right.
Now, as an olde farte, I indulge in mixed salted nuts instead of venturing out of the house.
Yesterday . I went to the local bar for a beer . The bartender grew up in Italian kitchen restaurant here in town . Shes cooking for people .
She gave me minestrone, with bread and olive oil . While sitting at the bar . We trade food .
I guess im drinking and eating. It was fantastic
All I would add to the pizza is putting a gatorade bottle on the night stand. I was convinced it reduced the severity of the hang over. Placebo effect or real reduction in hang over symptoms? Not sure but it seemed to help, as did food. Don’t go to sleep on a gut full of alcohol and nothing else.
Hydration is the key to a better tomorrow. And I’m always the one filling everyone’s water glasses to make sure their next day is better, too.
You are a good friend! I didn’t drink water in between beers or cocktails when I was out partying and would have been better off if I had. Now I am old and do not party nearly as often but I am better at staying hydrated.
It was never even on anyone’s minds back in the day. Water? What’s the point
And back then red wine was my party beverage for the most part, so I don’t even know how I survived my 20s. Chain-smoking at that
I remember mornings waking up where the inside of my mouth felt & tasted like I licked the sidewalk on my way home. Ew.
Reminds me of the time after a long project that a bunch of us spent the evening eating smoked oysters and oysters Rockefeller, drinking Laphroaig, and smoking cigars.
The next morning while shaving, I felt as if I also needed to shave my tongue.
That was the last time I smoked a cigar.
Thankfully, you didn’t blame the oysters.
Definitely pizza… but better yet the junkiest of junk food (JitB tacos & onion rings, Tommy’s/Wienerschnitzel chili dogs/burgers, various fast food nachos, McD’s cheeseburgers/fries).
Water bottles were not a regular part of our lives then. A canteen yes, on a back pack trip, but we never carried a water bottle around with us or even kept one in the car. Now you can flip a valve on a specialized water bottle and infuse a flavor. That needs to go to the ‘newest trend, eye roll’ thread.
BITD (way back…). We’d hit a restaurant on Jackson Street in Chinatown after drinking up to the 2am bar alcohol cutoff, at least 3 times a week.
Waiter knew us, and we never really had to order. He’d cart out big tubs of Chow Mein, Chow Fun, Congee and a couple of other things.
Cold Tea, of course. Ice cold Budweisers in a stainless tea pot dripping with condensation. Beer actually taste pretty good in a regulation tea cup!! Especially at 2:30am.
Seems they do that in Singapore too.
Aw, man. Greasy Chinese food is bomb when buzzed. Wish we had a place that was open that late.
The old Sam Wo’s in SF always fit that bill.
The waiter was actually a moonlighting skilled ER intake nurse whose triage skills were nonpareil.
Both on a pizza. I like egg rolls when feeling the spirit.
