Well, maybe I should have posted this under food aversions. We’ve all heard of , or experienced, loss of taste from COVID, but evidently this is a sequella of my stroke. Didn’t even notice it at first, because I had no appetite at all; later I noticed that the smell of my aides reheating their food in the microwave made me nauseated, so much so that I had to shut my bedroom door and stuff a towel at the bottom and turn on the bathroom fan (Hyperosia is being oversensitive to smell.). All of my food has a bitter aftertaste -it’s hard to describe. Of course lemon juice tastes normal. lol. I’m still eating, but it’s a job. Ensure suddenly isn’t so nasty; I have a big bowl of grape nuts in the morning so I can aggressively chomp. Anyone have any experience with this? I have a video follow-up visit with a neurologist next week-I’ll ask about it. Hope it goes away.
Pineapple can randomly give any foods I eat after, a bitter taste. It lasts from a few hours to a day.
I hope it goes away for you, too! You’ve had to deal with so much crap this year
Yeah, and who wants food to taste like crap??
Well, it’s a probably a swell weight loss approach (for thems that care). Nobody wants to eat overly bland or crappy tasting food
I lost 15 lbs just being in the hospital and in bed at home. No appetite.
During my last cardiac surgery, I experienced minor complications. When I awoke, I was aphasic (I could not speak or write intelligibly) though I apparently could still understand speech. They initially thought I may have had a stroke during the operation. They sedated me again, as I was evidentially upset and kept trying to pull out my vent tube, IV’s, etc. I thankfully have no memory of any of this.
After my release, everything tasted wrong. Water had an awful, metallic taste. Food had almost no taste at all. The only thing I could stomach was Coca Cola, for some reason. I barely ate for the first week I was home. Then, one morning, I woke up with an overwhelming desire for a cup of tea. I made one and boom. I could taste tea, and sugar and nothing else. Everything just snapped back.
Altered taste is, if not common, at least a known side effect of anasthesia, and can also be brought on by certain meds. It’s worth mentioning to your doc.
I hope things readjust for you soon.
NB- they think my aphasia was caused by microscopic bubbles in my bloodstream, caused by the heart/lung machine I was hooked into. No one is really sure.
Ugh. I’m so sorry I hope it changes back to normal again very, very soon!
Yep.
And now for the GOOD NEWS- the Motor Vehicles Administration just informed me that I’m cleared to drive!!
That’s great!! I remember getting the all clear after my stuff as well. It’s awesome to be able to leave the house on one’s own again.
So glad your recovery is proceeding apace!
Lejust the knowledge that I can go out on my own is so immensely empowering.
