I’ve seen Donaji mentioned on a few threads but couldn’t find a dedicated thread on it, so I’m starting one! Donaji is an Oaxacan restaurant on 24th Street in the Mission.
On a recent visit I had:
Totopos ($12)
Chips, Mole, Queso, Crema, Avo
Totopos are a lot like tortilla chips, and these were kind of like nachos that are dressed with black mole, crumbly queso fresco, guacamole, and some vegetables like sliced radishes and pickled onions. This was quite nice and fairly substantial.
Street Tacos (3 per order) ($16)
Donaji makes their tortillas fresh in-house. You can mix and match tacos, and I had:
Cochinita - Asiote Pork, Pineapple Relish, Epazote Aioli
This was tender cochinita pibil with pineapple, nicely seasoned.
Quesabirria - Seared Cheese, Braised Beef, Onions, Cilantro, Au Jus
Probably my favorite of the three tacos, this was a tender beef birria taco with a thick layer of crispy gooey grilled cheese and a ramekin of beefy broth to dip it in.
Mushroom - Mushrooms, Guajillo Aioli, Fried Shallots
This had maybe portobello mushrooms? They were nicely cooked, and the fried shallots added some crunchiness.
They also have a salsa macha chili oil which I drizzled on everything.
On a previous visit I had:
Tlayuda ($25)
11 inch Oaxacan Corn Tortilla “Pizza”
Choice of: Chicken Tinga, Steak, Pork Chorizo or Vegan Potato & Soyrizo
Topped with : Bacon Drippings, Pickled Cabbage
Onions | Salsa | Queso Oaxaca | Avocado
Oh boy, this is meant for sharing This was a huge dish of a large tortilla topped with a plethora of ingredients. It had a very good mix of flavors and textures - the crispy corn tortilla, Oaxacan string cheese, a bean base, some acidic lightly pickled cabbage, beef strips (I had it with beef on my waiter’s recommendation), avocado, pickled onion, and crunchy radish. Apologies to Taco Bell, this is a real Mexican pizza. It was very nice and I had to take some home.
And another cochinita taco.
Also a michelada.
