Don Jose Mexican Restaurant mini-review [Yonkers, NY]

Just a quick review inspired by a delicious lunch today. We were out shopping along Central Park and had a craving for Mexican, and a quick Google search led us to this place, which I had never heard of despite living in Yonkers for nearly 9 years. It’s tucked away in the small strip mall that used to be home to Bed Bath & Beyond and Harmon Beauty Supply - I think the restaurant is the only business left open in the building.

We enjoyed a basket of chips and housemade salsa (gratis) followed by a birria chimichanga, green chicken enchilada and a fried cheese taco (kind of like a flauta), plus FANTASTIC guacamole and refritos. The waiter warned us that the food might take a bit longer than we were used to because everything is made in house and cooked to order, and while that was true, the wait was not egregious and the food was definitely worth it. Lunch prices were also incredibly reasonable for the amount and quality of the food - most plates were around $15-16 (dinner menu is bit more expensive but not outrageous by any means). We’ll be back, and soon.
