Just saw this article about dominican food in [Washington Heights] The writing is incredibly amateurish especially annoying - she never said whether the goat was good. And the references to cannabis cooking (not in the restos visited) made me wonder whether any of it was credible and made me feel pretty stodgy!
I have liked dominican food quite a lot in the past - the question is are there any good stops at present? The last time we went on upper broadway the spot we went to was just so so.
I assumed the references to her companion’s businesses was to give him a shout-out for the free food tour that got her an article (he’s on Tock even).
Cannabis cooking is a whole thing (one of Floyd Cardoz’s sons is in the business of infusing oils for cooking, as an aside).
But I wish she had closed the loop on whether the King of Goat lived up to its name (as opposed to King of Beans?), and I didn’t understand how the green plantains in the mofongo were “soft and sweet”.
Yes the mofongo thing was one of the weirdnesses, thanks for the link on cannabis cuisine, been there and done that, its really about the experience of getting high not about the food as described, notwithstanding some of the stated aspirations of some of the cooks… The author seemed rather silly, impressionable and very young.
Can I say I cant remember? 2 or 3 years, starting Inwood Park and the cloisters and walking south - there was a cluster of places on upper Broadway S of the hospital, I d say El Malecon (it was on the W side of the street) would be a good guess. My preference has been to try chicharrones de pollo or masita frita and some kind of rice thing -maybe squid and rice - in these places.
The neighborhood you mention sure is Malecon territory, but there are many smaller Dominican places nearby, most of which I haven’t set foot in this year, or last. We can try one or two when you’re ready to make the trek.
