Thatās hilarious. Is that truly a possibility? Actually being poisoned by too much heat?
Interesting. I once got a 6-pack of instant noodle bowl called something like Inferno Chicken that was hotter than the hottest Korean or Thai restaurant dish Iāve ever had (and I used to test the limits). My son, with a notoriously firey palate, couldnāt eat more than a half bowl at a time.
Samyang Foodsā stock price has soared 70% in recent months after its Buldak carbonara ramen went viral on TikTok, with the product becoming so popular in the US there were reports of shortages.
Looks like the problem is more TikTok than the noodle itself. Danish gov is incompetent in identification of the problem.
Ah, another TikTok trend. Whoda tunk
You wouldnāt believe how many folks in one of my cooking groups make recipes they saw there.
I am curious about the actual claim of poisoning. What are the actual risks of ingesting too much capsaicin ā besides a very unpleasant night? Death? What am I missing here?
Go on youtube and watch the midwits who eat a whole Carolina Reaper. I think poison isnāt the best term, and the authorities here may be over reacting. But certainly there can be short term bad health effects.
And one-off major effects if their body canāt handle the stress - a kid died after eating a super hot chip. They were sold as a single chip in a coffin-shaped container. I think the product was discontinued after that, although I donāt know if it was at health authority request.
Thatās awful. I feel for the parents. Losing a child over something so incredibly stupid
Eating too spicy food gives you diarrhea. Food poisoning can give you that as well, but by definition it is caused by bacteria as far as I understood. I feel the authority should say very spicy food damages your organs.
I saw that single chip on sale, and was tempted to offer to H, he should be glad that I didnāt.
Well now I have to try it.
OMG. Please report when you plan on doing it, and get back to us within 24 hours
Thanks, thatās the one I was thinking of. Looks like heād fall into the category of āif their body canāt handle the stressā.
Iāve had the regular superhot version and I already think itās starting to cross the line between tasty yet spicy to just not good. I wonāt even try the 3x spicy version. Itās still on the market though. I think thereās a Darwin award to the folks who follow these stupid trends and challenges, and you have to make smart choices.
But there was someone (a teen I think) who died after trying the one-chip challenge from Paqui, so the constant question of how much do you have to protect those Darwin award winners from themselves. The person who died I thought have had an underlying health issue that was unknown to the teen at the time.
Yes,
@ElsieDeeās post just two above yours mentioned it.
The Guardian taste-tests that ramen.
Thanks for posting this. Fun and interesting, and until they hit 3X they didnāt seem to be bothered too terribly much.
I wonder, though, about cumulative effects. Itās one thing to eat a bite or two of very spicy stuff, another to try to finish the entire bowl.
I tried a similar product today, considered by the interwebz (if Redditors are to be believed) to be somewhere between the regular and 2x Buldak in terms of heat: https://www.amazon.com/Volcano-Spicy-Chicken-Noodle-Pack/dp/B075ZRJDK4
I would consider my spice tolerance to be above average but not exceptional (for instance, Tabasco registers as spicy to me but I could easily drink it if I wanted to, while something like Frankās Red Hot is more vinegar than spice). These are definitely hot, though not abusively so for me. I found the sauce too sweet for my liking so I only added about 3/4 of the packet - if I had used it all, they may have approached the abusive level. One thing I noticed, however, was that whatever type of pepper/spice they used didnāt have a building effect - each bite was hot, but the heat faded fairly quickly. No milk required, just one quick blow of the nose when I was done with my bowl and I was good to go.
I may order the regular and 2x Buldakās to compare. I wouldnāt buy these again, more because I didnāt like the sweetness than the spice. The noodles themselves were a bit thicker than your average heat-and-eat ramen, and quite tasty IMO.
This is as spicy as I get with Korean ramen. And I add extras (food bits, not spice). Itās not that Iām a wimp; my digestive system canāt deal with anything more extreme, even if my mouth can. Iād rather the heat enhance the underlying food (which Iām still able to taste, hopefully). Iām not sure Iād ever do a recipe from Reddit ā¦
