[Deganwy, North Wales] Ebb & Flow

This is the restaurant at the Quay Hotel. We’ve eaten here several times over the years, usually when we’ve stayed at the hotel. It’s one of the better places along the coast – although it’s fair to say that the area is not well endowed with good places. It’s a bright room with efficient serving staff who have a ready smile.

To start, a couple of koftas were made from Welsh lamb. A bit dense in texture, they tasted fine. They sat on a mini naan and dabs of mango chutney and a yoghurt and mint dip decorated the plate. Soup of the day was vegetable and was well made, although there had been an assertive hand with the salt.

That hand had also been near a samphire, spinach and sumac risotto, otherwise nicely made and very tasty. It was topped with a perfectly cooked fillet of sea bream. Chicken breast was enhanced with a rarebit topping and a sprinkle of breadcrumbs. There was a little spinach, shreds of courgette and a portion of dauphinoise potato. An Indian spiced potato and onion seed bhaji tasted OK in itself but was just completely out of place with the other elements. Just an odd decision to put it on the plate.

We finished with good espresso which came with a small piece of lovely flapjack.
