Daeho Kalbijjim & Beef Soup [San Francisco, Japantown]

We’re in for a a bit of rain here in the Bay Area, what with an “atmospheric river” moving through with a “bomb cyclone”. It’s a good time for soup! I went to Daeho Kalbijjim & Beef Soup in SF Japantown to find some.

Daeho opened in 2019 with this original location in Japantown, and has since expanded to Milpitas, a stall at the SF H Mart food court, San Mateo, Las Vegas last year, and Bellevue, WA this year. Expansions to Concord, Austin, and Honolulu are also planned. They seem to be doing quite well - the Japantown location usually has a long waiting list on weekends. In addition to Daeho, the owners also operate modern Korean restaurant Bansang on Fillmore, yakiniku restaurant YakiniQ a few doors down, and new takeout only sushi restaurant Aji Kiji on Fillmore.

It was a bit rainy.

For lunch today I had the Seolleong Tang, the #24 Modeum ($30) which is a combination. Seolleongtang is a milky colored ox bone soup, and the combination had brisket, tendon, and oxtails. It really hit the spot. The soup was creamy and rich with collagen and very comforting. I added some of the provided spring onions and some salt and pepper to taste. There was a generous amount of beef in the soup, and also some thin somyeon wheat noodles in the soup.

Side dishes and rice - garlic chives with carrots and onion kimchi, daikon kimchi, napa cabbage kimchi, soy sauce pickled jalapeños and onions / jangajji, scallions, and purple rice (you can also get white rice if you prefer)

On a previous visit, I had the Kalbi Tang ($26) / beef rib soup. I’ve had Daeho’s kalbi tang before via delivery and it’s always been good. And it was good at the restaurant too. It had a very flavorful clearish broth, and a good amount of short rib, some of which was on the bone along with slices for easy eating. There were also some strips of fried egg and some chewy wide glass noodles. It came with the same banchan and rice as the seolleongtang.
