D10 / Speakeasy closed [SF]

Usually, our press is good at jumping on stories about breweries, and closures, and especially closures of breweries.

As I often am driving along Evens Ave in Hunters Point past the old Speakeasy building, I sometimes see the door open to their taproom / clubhouse, and occasionally stop in.

A few months ago, there was a fellow pouring, and I asked him what was up. He said they were a new thing, called “District 10”. They had not just the large Speakeasy brewing tanks and system, but also a smaller one they had got somewhere else (he said the place, I’ve just forgotten), and they were using the small system to tune up their recipes and start brewing.

He offered me some beer, but I was going between things and it was not convenient. I didn’t have my growler in the car, nor did he have the can-growler system operational.

About a month ago, I saw they were representing at a beer thing in Alameda or Oakland, but it wasn’t on a convenient day, so I didn’t go check.

Weekend before last, I was fetching beer for folks at the shop and saw the door open. I went in, to find a chalkboard sign “District 10 Last Day”. I asked the guy pouring (not the guy I had seen a few months earlier) and he said they were pouring until the tanks were dry, and that was going to be it. No more district 10. I asked him what happened, and he said the guy running the thing (maybe the guy I had seen before) was incompetent.

What I do know was many months happened with no beer, no press, no events (other than that one). I had them on instagram, and no posts or chatter.

I wonder what will be next for the Speakeasy location?

Ol Speakeasy was such a frontrunner in the Mega Hops IPA style. ( Once I stopped in and I think it was their 20th anniversary, and they were pouring a XX anniversary beer… OMG … I hope to never taste anything that hoppy again. I mean it was great in that “THIS ONE GOES TO 12” blast your hair back way, but after that, your stomach rather curdles a bit). I have one bottle left of their dark barleywine, finding an occasion to drink it.)

Are you talking about the brewery which made “Prohibition Ale” and “Big Daddy IPA” ?

Yes. Currently listed in Google Maps as “D10 Taproom”.

I think these are two breweries (D10 and Speakeasy Ales & Lagers) which might have overlapping founders/personell) which share the taproom

I was there last week. I think the taproom is now closed, i don’t think they are brewing beer anymore.

I think District 10 isn’t brewing anymore but Speakeasy Ales & Lagers is still brewing beers - I just saw Big Daddy IPA at a BevMo or Total Wine

Full Circle is located in Fresno, they own the brand. I don’t know if they are brewing in sf, but i would bet against it. I can check it out sometime.
