Could the best burger in the world be found in Madrid, and in Valencia??

Plenty on the list in New York, as well:

So many smash burgers…

Too many to declare anything “World’s best!”. Seems more like a list of “burgers we liked in the cities we spend time in”. But then again I’m prone to ranting about food lists in general….

As a huge fan of Valencia as a city and food destination I’m still hesitant to agree on its burger excellence but if I can tear myself away from the fantastic seafood and rice dish options maybe I will try one of their suggestions. Spain is not short on good quality beef.

Surprised the smash burger at Goldies didn’t make it in the top 25.

Who knew Oslo and Stockholm made such aMAZing burgers

Better that the burger crowds flock to Oslo and Stockholm on the basis of “best lists” and that your go to place in Berlin stays under the radar. Michelin in Asia and World’s/Asia 50 best have done an excellent job of shielding my fav places from tourist scrutiny.

These dudes slammed Kumpel und Keule in Berlin, which my partner says is the best burger she has ever eaten (certainly the best I have had in recent memory, but I don’t spend a lot of time ordering burgers, just once in a while).

A few based in London, which are accessible to me. Might have to do a London burger crawl at some point. The overly messy and vertical ones don’t really appeal. I know this might be blasphemy, but I prefer a burger I can hold in my hand and not risk a dislocated jaw when taking a bite.

It’s funny. Because burgers are so common where I live in Canada, I almost never order burgers when I’m travelling to the UK or Europe. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a burger in the UK, over 17 or 18 visits over the past 30 years. Other than one visit to McD’s in Cologne when I was a kid, which was memorable because I came down with food poisoning the same day, I haven’t eaten a hamburger in Europe. I have ordered frikadelle in Berlin which are hamburger adjacent.

Ordering a burger on a bun while traveling abroad feels like a wasted meal to me, when I could be ordering something I can’t find at home.

Of course, I wouldn’t be able to find some types of burgers and some types of toppings or garnishes at home. I am curious about the NZ / OZ burgers with beet.

I would probably order differently if I was to stay in the UK or Europe for more than 18 days in one visit, and had a craving for comfort food.

I ordered one burger in Japan, only because we couldn’t find a recommendation gyu katsu place that was recommended by a friend, then the next restaurant where we were seated at was too expensive for my friend, and by that point, my friend had become hangry. We found a fast casual burger restaurant nearby. It was a very good burger, but we didn’t seek it out.

You make a very good point. My PIC and I always giggle when we see the long line at Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebab, which is a good döner, but mos def not waiting in line for.

Goldies has lines, too — it’s the most popular smashburger in Berlin, and deservedly so.

@plragde I went there once and don’t remember the burger, so I guess it didn’t quite wow me.

My go-to used to be The Bird, the OG burger place run by a NYC ex-pat, but it’s a real gut bomb & my body can no longer process that amount of grease, sadly.

I did my own burger comparison many, many, many years ago on my (now long inactive) blog. I see Berlin Burger International has declined since, according to the BurgerDudes, but it was never top notch.

Like you, I rarely go out to a restaurant and order a burger. It’s a destination food for me, where I specifically want a burger from a specific place.

Goldies is that for me now, plus an amazing deal at a local joint back home — a bacon double cheeseburger with fries and a coke for $7.99.

Absolute joke of a “best of” list, which most of these usually are. Their top 5 best in Toronto(my home) includes 5 Guys (pretty good), Hooter’s(seriously???) and Wendy’s(prob one of my fave fast food burgers)
I have at least 3 burger joints within walking distance of my crib that put all of these to shame. These burger doods don’t know their asses from a hole in the ground…

But tell us how you really feel

I mean come on, Hooters?? 5 guys??? :man_facepalming:

Oh, I totally agree. Ludicrous to include any chain “burgers,” but I think you know pretty well how I feel about FF chains in general: a waste of my $$$.

I love me some hamburgers, but 8 of the top 25 burgers are located in NYC? And 4 in London? Let me guess, the Burgerdudes are from NYC?
It is a fun list and I am likely to try as many as possible!
I may be traveling through Madrid in September, hopefully, so there is that.
Eating a burger in Spain is going to be counter-intuitve, but I am putting Hundred Burgers and Briochef into my phone…

I kinda like Five Guys almost as much as I like the Burger Shack.

What would you consider the best burger in Montana?

I ordered a burger at an old school luncheonette in Bozeman, which was memorable, but more for the vibe and service than the burger.

Nothing wrong with eating a burger in a different country, as long as you’ve had your fill of the local cuisine . The burger I had in CDMX was very good, not top 10 good but it hit the spot. The burger I had in Malaga at my hotel, which was included with the room rate was filling but kinda bog standard.

I lived most of my life a short distance from where you are now, @Phoenikia, and you are right that hamburgers are ubiquitous, but I would still order them when visiting the US, as Ontario food-safety laws prohibited burgers being cooked less than well-done. (The current “raw-meat” government may have changed that, but I don’t live there any more.) I was a regular at a local joint that had a Monday burger special, and after gaining their trust, I could use the phrase “as lightly cooked as possible” to get medium-well, if the server remembered to transmit my request. But medium was impossible. Of course, none of this matters with smash burgers.

Also, what is with brioche buns? They feel like an elaborate French practical joke.
