costco yay/nay/meh

Thanks all!-- very useful. My current pair is at least 9 years old & pretty beat up-- bifocal also, cost me $800. They weren’t fashionable. Ironic that I went to that eye-doc some 35-ish years ago his prices were about 2/3 less for contact lenses then the guy I’d been to. Which was $300+ vs $120+. I stayed with Mike but his office got bigger & fancier w/ corresponding price increase. Now I have to hunt down a new doc for a new prescription.

I order my contacts through them. Price can’t be beat. And a Hopkins optometrist told me that when she was in school she worked part-time at a Costco optical department, and she was impressed with the quality of the eyeglass lenses they made. IMR not the place to go for trendy, stylish frames if that’s your thing, but the quality of the lenscrafting is very good.

They regularly have sales where you buy two pairs and the second pair is $40 off.

To clarify, that’s two pairs with the same prescription.

Right, but I got one regular and a pair of sunglasses, same prescription.

Our family has been buying tires at Costco for years. I had the same issue you did a while back, and the warranty covered 50% of the tire price. The tech checked all the other tires as well. I love that they don’t upsell you on other “urgent” car care (looking at you Mavis–disc brakes with 7-8mm do not need replacement and new rotors).
Plus, while the tires get installed or repaired, one can indulge at the food court in a leisurely manner.

I’ve been happy with glasses and contacts from Costco.
The prices for my contacts are about 30% less than 1800 Contacts.
The frame selection is decent, with a few designer items, and way less expensive than Perle or Lenscrafters. Lens quality is excellent, even with my astigmatism, and they can get the rx in .125 increments. The staff at the optical dept where I am (Westchester Cty NY) has worked there for years and are very helpful and knowledgeable. If there’s an issue, they will fix it.

We used to go to Costco for tire replacement until my local branch totally screwed me around and would have had me go without my car for several days. Dealership had it done in no time and for about the same price.

I gave up on them for tires, too. No appointments at my local store, and the wait was up to 4 hours. I went to a local indie, they ordered the tires, the next day I dropped off the car, went across the street for lunch, and the tires were ready. Much cheaper, too.

My experience with Costco Optical was awhile ago, but not good. They were rushed and substantially overcorrected my vision. Prices were fair.

But this error may’ve been purely the fault of the particular optician I saw.

The optometrists (eye exams/ prescription-writers) are independent of the Optical department (frames, lens sales/ordering, fittings). I am happy with both at my Costco, where prices are 1/3 of what I’ve paid at other providers.

My spouse reminds me that “you have to answer the questions correctly”, for the eye exam to get good results. But the newest automated measuring equipment gets them amazingly close for the fine-tuning questions. Which is better 1 or 2? Better here or here? etc.

And they have done no-charge re-exam and re-make when either I didn’t answer all the questions correctly, or the lensmaker didn’t quite get my tricky prescription with prism precisely aligned.

Frankly, IME Costco optical is on a par with Walmart’s optical department. Both were error-prone.

The Costco chocolate mousse opera cake has become our go to when entertaining friends and fam at home. Rich, chocolately and not too sweet, there’s some sort of layer in the cake that creates a nice contrast to all the chocolate. However it’s a bear to get home, it fits into a big shopping bag but it slides around so it’s important to keep it flat and steady.

We continue to enjoy the prime strips, haven’t really had a good experience with the frozen Asian stuff

Sukhi’s Chicken Ginger Coconut Meatballs are getting a repeat buy for us. Fully cooked, sold refrigerated in a 2-pack (4-5 adult main dish servings per pack) and can be frozen/reheated.

We like Sukhi’s Coconut Chicken Curry, but find the 4-5 servings per pack seems wildly optimistic to us. We’re not big eaters but find each pack is right for the two of us (i.e., 4 servings for the 2-pack package).

That is where their humongous boxes come in handy.

Can you please try the tres leches sometime?
The opera and that are my two biggest temptations there.

As you wish!

I was to costco yesterday, no tres leches :unamused: I think they rotate cake, hopefully we’ll see it again soon.

I tried my first rotisserie chicken from the new plastic bag yesterday. While I applaud the step to try to reduce plastics by eliminating the clamshell, this is a big NAY for me.

I found the bird soggy and flaccid. And the bag is shift- and spill-prone.
