costco yay/nay/meh

Yes it does make sense. There’s more totalk about in Costco than the roasted chickens. For example, Kirkland Grass Fed Butter from New Zealand is way better than ordinary Kirkl;land butter and very nearly as good as theKerrygold–for about half the price.

My nmeigjhbor is very big on the Grangestone single malt.

I like that New Zealand butter a lot, think it’s better than Kerrygold (I’ve only tried the salted)

Now that TJ again has the cultured butter from Brittany, I’m getting that again, love it but I guess the New Zealand one is a better price.

I have a feeling I’ll be driving to Edison more often now that The Sprout no longer works in Woodbridge. I have family in the Boston area and always seem to manage to get to the Waltham Costco since it’s not far off of 95.

Our favorites are the Costco bourbon for making Pinecones (bourbon and lemonade - sounds awful, tastes great), Aperol in the large bottles, and great prices for Angel’s Envy and Bulleit bourbons.

I wish Costco could be a one stop shop for me, but alas the fruit it awful and they don’t have some of my key items. I find there’s too much processed food overall.

Yay
Sicilian Lemon Juice twin pack bottles
Big jars of capers and sun dried tomato and pickled beets
Kirkland raw nuts in bags
Bananas
Big bags of fresh garlic
Lundberg short grain brown rice
Spray oil twin packs on sale are a steal, olive or avocado
Giant bags of Cape Cod chips are so cheap

Nay
Why no fresh herbs?
Vanilla beans are wizened and overpriced
Appalling off season tomatoes
The onions and potatoes are very unreliable, as bad as Publix - produce here in Central FL nowadays is often rank and overpriced
No cheap cooking wine candidates in the vino dept
No extra firm tofu, just waterlogged firm
No decent tortilla chips or fresh corn tortillas

Meh
the big jar of saffron is just ok, but there’s a ton of it
Kirkland EVOO bottle is eh, there are no canned options at all
The bakery bread is just ok
Kirkland frozen fruit is not great - I’ve tried em all, I think it’s the handling, it must melt and refreeze
Boring limited selection of boring boring yogurt
A million options of frozen breaded boring things, I once counted seven chicken nugget options?

The Costco thread 2024- Ontario Region

@elvisahmed keeps a regional Costco thread running on the Ontario board, in case anyone is interested. Costco is highly regional.

The selection in Canada is quite different than what I’ve seen or heard about being available at America Costcos.

LOL.

At Costco, that would be called a “potted plant”

Therefore a US thread.

(I love that thread, but mostly it makes me envious of what isn’t available in the US :joy:)

Yep, could be multiple regional Costco threads on a Regional board! I know I’m jealous of what’s available at the Santa Cruz Costco.

Specifically, the seafood. The seafood at Ontario Costcos was not very good when I was a member. My only return to Costco, after being a member for around 12 years, was returning some fresh salmon with a 2 inch long worm wriggling around, who popped up then dove back into the flesh while I was explaining to the clerk why I was returning the salmon. Goes with the territory of fresh fish, but it still grossed me out!

Costco has poutine at Canadian Costco Snackbars. I know that much. I haven’t tried it because it would make me too sleepy to be alert for the drive to escape the Costco parking lot.

My cousin from Santa Cruz liked our vats of Feta and our hockey sticks.

It me.

Another recommendation: the Kirkland unsalted fancy mixed nuts (almonds, cashews, pecans, and pistachios). I’m not happy that they switched packaging from the plastic jar to the plastic bag. I know it saves space and shipping costs, but by me the jar is recyclable and the bag isn’t. (I’ve been decanting the nuts into my old jar.)

Speaking of regional variations…the Bay Area Costcos, as least the ones I patronize, have 2-packs of Boudin sourdough loaves.

I don’t usually buy a replacement until I finish the already opened container but for some reason I did last time. I think it was during the period between Thanksgiving and Xmas and I was trying to limit my trips. Boy am I glad it worked out that way and I also decanted the nuts into the old jar.

Agree 100% on the packaging. We would stockpile the containers throughout the year, then fill them with homemade caramel corn, candied pecans, etc. at Christmas to give to friends and family. I complained to Costco with your exact argument, too - jars get reused or repurposed, but the bags get tossed (our local waste management isn’t equipped to handle the bags with recycling). Didn’t hear back from them at all.

This product was discussed by Costco last summer in an article about their packaging. “A good example is the Kirkland Signature line of nuts. Transitioning these products from plastic jars to bags means 85% less plastic is used in the packaging, without sacrificing quality.”
Rest of the article here.

Yeah, I read that in the magazine. Still, for our purposes, it increases the solid waste stream and ultimately dissuades us from buying the nuts, because we try to keep our waste to a minimum. Most weeks, we can put all our household trash in container the size of a produce bag.

I like their frozen dark sweet cherries (so that is a yay from me) and they used to have good frozen pineapple but their mixes are awful. One of the few things that defrosted in a recent 37hr power outage was a bag of their daybreak blend. It was flavorless but I kept it thinking would find some use for it. I was happy to see is sagging in the bag, Now I feel justified in tossing it in the compost heap once it warms up enough for me to do so.

That’s a feature of Costcos!!
