Coronavirus - what to stock up on?

The rest of your post-not-quite-apocalyptic, er, équipage  seems self-evident, but “air compressor”?

Blue crabs.

They’re virtually giving them away in Albania.

They used to be so common in the Chesapeake that they were given away in bars like popcorn and peanuts are today (well pre-CV-19). Old Bay (mostly salt) was developed to make people buy more beer.

“There is no market for crabs,” says Mr Hoxha, who has a family of five to feed."

I get that they’re invasive and disruptive of traditional fishing/culinary habits, but has no one gotten around to telling these people they’re edible, and even extremely tasty?

They’re messy.

True, but think of all the visceral satisfaction they could get from hammering the invasive little bastards with those little wooden mallets…

Whom do I have to write to in Albania to get them to ship me all their live unwanted blue crabs?

jcostiones.com. Send me your next stimulus check or if you’re not in the US a cashiers check or money order for $1200 will suffice.

You will have crabs swimming out of your ears.

Never had blue crabs as far as I know. I have had gulf crabs a few times, but they were all picked & done up in Cajun or Creole preps.

I will say, I’m totally spoiled with giant King crabs as far as flavor and ease of eating goes. Favorite food in the world. Love Dungie for crab cakes, but picking can be a little laborious…

Think you all know that H has taken over all the food provisioning. I had oral surgery this morning, so he went to the grocery during the hour I was having a big a** implant jammed in my jaw.

He’s become way good at shopping and finds these incredible bargains. He’s then on a good deal high like I used to get. Anyway, pictured is some of today’s plunder. This isn’t the 1st time he’s gotten fab buys on whole tenderloins. There must be a glut on the market. So far it’s been very beefy in flavor, and pretty tender. Choice grade - need to go to Costco or other purveyors for the prime, and I sometimes debate the cost/benefit of that.

Not a fan of filet mignon, so maybe it’s not related, but there was a filet mignon sale at my local Lucky market that looked like that. Don’t recall seeing that at this store before, and wonder about it flying, even if it’s a bargain.

What is going on?

Rhetorical question, but maybe I should buy it.

Hands down, my favorite steak is a ribeye. I do like bacon wrapped filets with crab or lobster, as they’re not too rich to eat with buttery seafood, for me, anyway. Also love the tenderloin in beef stroganoff and stir fry dishes. The prices were amazing for both filet and NY strips, as you can see @shrinkrap.

That sounds amazing! Looking closer, that looks like that was two packages with different labels. Tenderloin and strip loin? The one I saw here was labeled just filet mignon. Not sure how much it weighed. I know husband would like it. I would buy ribeye in a heart beat.

Yes, strip loin on one pkg for 4.99$ lb, and tenderloin was $6.99 lb only. Amazing prices, good beefy flavor @shrinkrap.

I’m amazed how cheap those are at $4.99 a pound. Equivalent UK price would be about $25 a pound (rough double conversion from metric and sterling)

@Harters, the whole filet was actually $6.99/lb, with the New York strips going for $4.99/lb. I would say 6 months ago, filet would be about 19.99/lb, and the NY strips would have been about 9.99 - $12.99/lb. Just guessing a bit, as the price fluctuates somewhat, but even the higher prices would have been specials I think. Pork has gotten really cheap too, surprisingly tasty, and more tender than usual - for pork chops anyway. I love to do the big shoulder, also known as butt or picnic butt low and slow. Sooo good. Think you mentioned in an earlier post Mrs. H doesn’t like pork?

There are a LOT of moo-cows roaming around the United States, so that might have something to do with it. More available product causes prices to go lower?

However, there was a recent price hike on ground beef and other beef cuts because it wasn’t quite so available, so perhaps there’s now a glut on the marketplace because people are not buying as much meat?

I did, although she does eat it without enthusiasm. It tends to be something of an issue at Casa Harters. My second favourite meat, after lamb/mutton, is pork.

That’s too bad @Harters; although I don’t eat a whole lot of it, can’t imagine our food life without it.

You’ve been keeping a low profile lately. All ok? I’m bored as hell - oral surgery yesterday was fun, and the highlight of the summer so far! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
