Funny @Harters, find myself using those same 2 terms, and I don’t even watch BBC lately.
Many Americans have no idea that the BBC is on the television. I personally know at least one American who thinks BBC stands for something else entirely!
H ventured to his favorite supermarket yesterday, with mask and gloves. I’d written out a fairly big list, while also letting him know there were certain things on there that might be more like a wish list. He was able to get most everything we wanted/needed, plus some. One of the big scores was 30 rolls of tp, and 10 lbs each of flour and sugar. Also several packages of yeast for pizza, which we assume is just fast rising. There were a few things he didn’t get, because TBH, I think he didn’t feel like looking for them. But hey, in these dark times, I’ll take, and be happy with what I can get
Interesting @seal, we also get Canadian Broadcasting Co. in our market; find it interesting to hear the different perspectives, country to country.
Yes.
Actually I had in mind chef Jamie Olivers nightly coronavirus cookery programme. - which is on Channel 4 not the BBC. Still a government owned station, like the various BBC ones, but one that is mainly funded from adverts.
Another difference
Here in the states, women use sponges for birth control.
Yet this is common elsewhere:
And probably also avoid spotted dicks.
By the by, the origin of the name appears to be as dick being a dialect word for pudding
I’ve seen the same behavior in myself. Usually I’ll double back and look harder but with a face mask on and a bandanna over that (seems to keep the mask from shifting and reduces eyeglass fogging) I just want to get out of there.
I have to say the acceptance of folks wearing masks/bandannas, and not being able to bring your own bags in to a store is a pretty stark reversal of recent trends.
I just put goods in my grocery cart and load them into my bags in the trunk of the car. Hasn’t been a big deal for me.
No wonder I’ve had a weird craving for Kraft processed cheese product the last couple days!
You are right; the bag thing took me a few trips to get used to, as I am SO used to bringing my own bag, but it’s not a big deal. But it does seem like a reversal of recent trends. Seems like we were just talking about getting people to bring bags here.
The mask thing is mostly unnerving because the ads for them seem to be popping up everywhere. I’m sure these can be avoided with blockers and avoiding some sites, but I keep seeing masked faces! Just like the ones they tell you cant wear into a bank!
Now I’m thinking it must be a particular company thars following me around the net.
I read an article just today about how kolonya, a popular Turkish concoction of 80% ethanol plus various floral and herbal scents, is a tradition in most homes there. People sprinkle it on their hands many times a day - a long-time custom. (We get the word cologne from kolonya. ) Its use is increasing now, and supposedly helping to slow the spread of Covid-19.
I saw one too! My son actually brought some with him when he was home last month, and we teased him because he said he was told it was sanitizer, and we said it was cologne!
Don’t know if you can find masks easily in your country, here it’s impossible. In the retail stores including pharmacies, they are requisitioned by the government for hospital use. Meaning either you buy from black markets, or you have special friends, or DIY.

I don’t know how hard the “medical” ones are to get, but in the last week or so, you cant go far without one (you can’t go in some grocery stores), and lots off folks seem to making their own. It’s quite the fashion statement!
Just to be clear, these are not protecting the wearer; they are intended to protect others from YOU, just in case you are contagious, and don’t know it.
“In terms of what is considered a face covering, residents do not have to use an N-95 mask. A bandana, scarf, towel or homemade mask can also be used, San Francisco officials said.”
Here are the Bay Area counties that require face masks
Also, here’s on of two lists I just got from a restaurant I like State Bird Provisions), encouraging support for it’s vendors. The other list is local, and on the SF Bay area forum. Some of the links don’t work.

Just to be clear. It wouldn’t hurt if EVERYONE wore a mask of some sort (I’ve seen all kinds) in stores or close places. I wish some would start thinking of others instead of themselves. Better safe than sorry nowadays people right?
Just a pet peeve of mine lately when I venture out.
