I was at the local mega HEB grocery in Houston yesterday and the very nice seafood market was well stocked with them bringing out a fresh batch of Gulf of Mexico shrimp.
Fresh whole red snapper was 8.97 down two bucks and I’ll snare one Friday.
The seafood area was sparse but the meat section packed and I stayed the heck away from there.
My young adult daughter has extended her stay we with us in California, rather than returning to New York, after being laud off from her job there (digital marketing for the arts), last week.
Not what anyone wanted, but I think I’d be losing my mind if she was still in NYC
No BIG hugs and kisses but occasional small ones.
She is still working for a week or so, and it’s mind boggling, especially having grown up there, to see how the arts are affected, in New York and elsewhere.
I’ll have to look into dehydrated mushrooms for the future . . . I always keep jarred garlic in the fridge and onions in the pantry. No sense having food if you can’t dress it up a bit. The herb garden is starting to come back to life, so in a few weeks there will be that as well.
And yes, Malgato (the cat) has been surreptitiously sneaking my whiskey and then sleeping it off for hours at a time. But no, I will not share my scrapple with her. As a born-and-bred Philly girl scrapple is most certainly people food even though I’ve actually seen how and with what it is made.
I definitely passed within six feet of people in aisles in the supermarket, because the aisles are barely six feet wide, but it was a very brief “encounter” , and still at least three feet apart. Unless they make all the aisles one-way, this can’t be avoided.
These people were getting within 4 feet of me, not passing quickly, more like meandering inconsiderately, when there was no reason to get so close. One was someone who was elderly, so I was ready to cut her some slack. It was the man in his 30s that irked me more. He got into my space 2 times within a few minutes and I left the aisle with nothing to avoid him.
This was an empty , rather new, spacious store in the burbs. The aisles are around 8 feet wide. I realize I am lucky the store is not a crowded one . I’ve intentionally been shopping at less crowded stores, especially some independent stores that focus on food (no pharmacies, no pet food, no paper/no cleaning products) , because the crowds seem to be heading to the big one stop national chain grocery stores.
I feel for anyone in Manhattan and San Francisco, and other densely populated cities, where some aisles in some stores are only 4 feet wide.

We went under a 2-week stay-at-home order last night. I picked up a case of wine curbside (supporting our favorite wine shop, and our sanity) and two bottles of bourbon. I spritzed everything down with alcohol before bringing it into the house. Strange times.

The first delivery from a local butcher has just arrived. We ordered just after they started up and were then only offering a “beef box” of their choice, rather than being able to select individual items (that’s now changed). Anyway, I’m happy with the box - mainly beef but with other items. In total - 4 chicken breasts, 4 rump steaks, 12 pork sausages, 10 rashers of bacon, 2 packs of stew beef, 2 packs of mince, big joint of topside (we’ve cut it in half).
There seems to be a number of opportunities opening up for delivery of fruit & veg. Not decided yet, but we may sign up to a weekly box so that we’ve got secured regular supplies. And, late last night, Mrs H guessed correctly that the supermarkets might open up new delivery slots at midnight. We’d already got a slot for next week and were still unable to get home delivery but she was able to book a “click and collect” which is fine - apparently, they operate these from the supermarket car park and they load straight into the car, so no mingling with people needed.
When I went shopping two weeks ago as I was picking out a few chilies a woman came shoulder to shoulder with me in order to reach over me to grab something else. She made sniffle like noises as she did so. We are in Washington State which has had this around for a while so she should have been more aware. I am now running low on fresh produce but not sure if I want to face the fools again.
Unfortunately I could not buy frozen food at the time because our power company had a scheduled power outage that weekend. I’m going to have to get creative with the jarred pickled vegetables I have. I should have bought canned vegetables which I hate.
The quarantine is prolonged until 15 April. I’ve just placed a big order for half a lamb with my favourite source that I usually buy from the farmer market. They have an online promotion on a pack including a shoulder, a rack, a chop, a rump, a leg, a shank…and delivery is offered, arriving next week, need to clean up a bit the freezer. At least THIS will brighten the days!
So far Trade Fair (a Queens based supermarket chain) is still remaining open 24 hours a day. I’ve always been a night person so I’ve often shopped in the middle of the night - and now I’m going to be doing that exclusively, for as long as I can. I went to Trade Fair last night around 1:30 AM and there were only 6 or 7 people in the whole place, including the staff. Social distancing made easy. I really hope they can continue this, as I want to put off getting food delivered as long as I can.
This. So far, I’ve found delivery services to be subpar, with a very limited choice (and usually not the things I want). I’d do the late-night thing also, but even here in Vegas, it doesn’t seem to exist any more. Stores have shortened their hours.

We did our second supermarket home delivery order today. Before that, we did a full audit of the freezer, together with food (and other) cupboards. We’ve found our way round the website quite well this time - easier to simply enter a product in the search box, than looking for it in the various “departments” of the site. Things seem much better stocked than last week - even several brands of toilet paper. Although whether there will still be stock on Tuesday’s delivery day is another question. There was nothing that we really needed that was out of stock, although there were a couple of surprising missed items - fresh ginger, for example - out of stock last week and this week. We were not silly in over ordering but there were, literally, a few items where we bought, say, three when two would usually be OK.

I had to go out last night for an urgent care and pharmacy visit (I’m OK thanks to prescription abx + ear drops). In the 20 minutes before my script was ready I managed to grab assorted Easter basket junk and several varieties of PA-based Utz chips. Overpriced, but that’s what I get for shopping at CVS. On the way home I decided to look for rubbing alcohol at the grocery store and ended up with more snack and impulse purchases - tortilla chips and salsa, kettle-cooked potato chips, Ghirardelli dark chocolate brownie mix, numerous jars of pasta sauce, corn and ww tortillas, ww buns and bread, a pork butt, rolled oats, some Campbell’s soup, and three jars of Better than Bullion. The corn tortillas ended up being a duplicate, but we’ll get through them eventually. Oh, and some dark beer to give DH a break from the IPA. My tastes lean wine and cocktails, but I may split a couple with him. Effective Monday evening we go under 30-day stay-at-home order in NC. (Good! But ouch!)
