Coronavirus - what to stock up on?

Simmer the stock down to the consistency of fruit preserves, and freeze it in small cubes or baggies. Seal as airtight as possible. Allowing room for expansion, putting snack-sized baggies into a glass jar would be my method. No freezer odors get through glass.
Measure both the initial and reduced volumes, so you can mark the containers/bags with how much water to add to reconstitute.

Sadly, this pandemic puts us all in the same boat. In happier how-to-cope news, several close friends and I just tried doing our first virtual aperitivo hour via conference call and it was surprisingly fun. Beverage was optional. We’re already planning another virtual meetup. Next week my pals and I plan to chat about what to read and what to binge-watch to keep up our morale.

Useful info @paryzer. I’ll need to keep a closer than usual eye on our dog’s kibble supply.

Before Hurricane Ike hit Galveston/Houston in 2008 there was not a morsel of pet food or cat litter on the shelves, let alone human food. It shall pass.

This was the email that I received:

Things are a little backed up on our end with many pet parents ordering food and supplies. Rest assured, we’re working hard to deliver your order as soon as possible, while caring for the health and safety of our team members.

We expect most orders to be delivered within the next 3-5 days. You’ll automatically receive a tracking link as soon as your order ships. Nothing to do on your part. We’re taking care of it.

Thank you for understanding. We hope all our pet parents and their beloved pets stay safe.

Yours truly,
The Chewy Family

I think what Gov. Baker in MA has done after his 6:15pm press conference is a lot…no gatherings over 25 people, restaurants allowed to do takeout only.

Let’s to preach to the choir:

Stock up on common sense.

In our hymnal:

A professional (and time-tested) epidemiologist is among family. So, we pay attention to whether a denominator (bottom number in fraction) is being reported, because sample size matters, whatever “count” is the story’s focus. Simple division. If denominator is not reported, is there real science in report that can be followed to understand ratios in story?

It’s not what crowds “think”; it’s about thinking critically.

I’m just hoping our 12-year-old dishwasher holds up through this and we don’t lose WIFI. Otherwise, bets are off for survival.

Major newspapers like the NY Times and WaPo dropped their paywalls for online access to Covid-19 reporting. So has the New Yorker, https://www.newyorker.com/tag/coronavirus, which has both the latest developments overviews of historical pandemics.

You can have video conference calling in Skype (up to 50 people), Whatsapp (up to four people I think), and Facebook Messenger (also a big number). The apps/programs are free and so is the service. Apps on phones and programs on computers are interoperable. Some people just leave the app running in a small window so you can talk as you are moved to. We use a similar tool so my wife can peek in on our cat when she is traveling.

@Lambchop referred to cabin fever and @naf made similar comments. This is very much a personal thing. I’m perfectly content at home. Many days the furthest afield I go is to walk to the mailbox. My wife on the other hand is in and out multiple times per day. Our state governor has urged us to social distance. If we have a more formal lockdown I’m afraid she will go stark raving mad. My safety may be at risk.

Indeed. I was actually surprised at how much a videoconference with my close pals lifted my mood. I have spent many, many hours on work calls on which I’d rather not use the video because it’s more useful for me to focus on content.

Yet somehow seeing my friends’ faces in this social context was helpful. We used the free version of Zoom, which mostly worked great except for the 40 minute limit on group calls. We had fun!

Virtual meetups with friends and family groups are worth a try if you’re missing each other.

Here’s a link I found to a bunch of conferencing options, in case anyone wants to try this with their friends or family.

Starting on Sunday, restaurants, bars, all shops closed, except food shops (and pet food shops). Voting was permitted, although the voting rate was very low. Looks like the self imposed confinement measure didn’t work very well, as we saw yesterday, the weather was beautiful, in Paris parks were congested with people having picnics or kids having fun. Since cafés were closed, people went to food shops to buy drinks and sat on the benches on the streets to gather with friends. The scenes looked more like vacation. Government was furious. They will probably announced something more severe tonight, martial law is rumoured.

Oh @naf, so sorry to hear about these difficulties. It’s so much harder for people to spread out and distance in a city environment, I expect.

We have an exterior space at home. Yes, more difficult for people living in a small flat.

As well they should be. Highly irresponsible behavior. Will France be the next Italy/Iran/China? Heading that way.

Anecdotally, I see and hear that it is young people and some old people who are ignoring the recommendations to stay home. Those in the middle seem to see the risks differently and are taking heed of the need for social distancing and staying out of public.

New Jersey now has a curfew in place from 8 PM to 5 AM. All casinos, restaurants, bars, movie theaters and gyms must shut down at 8 PM tonight in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Husband went to buy more stuff in supermarket, he saw a woman was on the floor and two 20 something disputing, shops assistants tried to separate them and others were watching. The toilet paper shelves were still empty. Very few can food and frozen section was empty. We bought mostly fresh food.

Well it looks like I’m staying out till 8:05pm tonight!! (I don’t obey rules very well)
