Smile. How is that worse?
I prefer to transform them as frozen stocks, less space!
Penzey’s stock up, arrived today. The soup bases I’ve found to be excellent. They seem more concentrated then BTB, of which I buy the organic chicken and beef flavors. Love to add some ham base to split pea and ham soup. The seafood stock is when I don’t have enough shrimp shells or other trimmings to make my own. Tend not to freeze seafood shells or fish scraps unless using right away. Don’t freeze seafood stocks either, unless using within a month. They concentrate, and get too fishy imo. And I love fish! Be careful with the salt level on the Penzey’s bases, if you typically use BTB.
Wait, just an idea, is it possible to transform liquid stock to powder?
Probably, but it might take awhile in a low oven or dehydrator, and I don’t know about safety issues either. It would be cool to have a freeze dryer, and do it that way. Maybe you could reduce it down to a glacé viande or demi glacé stage though…excellent question!
Ah yeah! Especially my silly cat like those freeze dried chicken cubes snacks.
I saw a YouTube video on making powdered bone broth. Useful when going hiking I think, but takes too much time to do it. Like you said about safety concerns, no idea if we have to keep that in fridge or not or how long.
Wait…WHAT? They’re being pressured to close?
Gah. I remember PA’s state store system. I really disliked it.
My 67-yo MIL is in the Midwest and starting to self-isolate. Also feeling a lot of anxiety about her risk. We sent her an Instacart order tonight so she doesn’t have to go out. She’s diabetic, lives alone, doesn’t cook much for herself (her fridge is invariably bare when we visit), and is a pretty light eater (a snacker), so we tried to be mindful when ordering. We love her to death and don’t want her to be in a tight spot. We ordered:
milk
low-cal wheat bread
raspberries
blackberries
peanut butter
bacon
frozen chicken breasts
frozen 80/20 ground beef patties
cottage cheese
Raisin Bran (her fave)
celery
baby carrots
frozen breakfast sandwiches
tissues
bath soap
lettuce
tomato
deli turkey
ww tortillas
canned refried beans
sliced cheddar
Mexican blend shredded cheese
taco seasoning packet
“hearty” canned beef and vegetable soup
Acetaminophen (thanks for the heads up about ibuprofen, @naf)
Diet Coke (her fave)
spaghetti squash
avocado
low-sugar marinara
shelf-stable cheese tortelloni
instant brown rice
Caesar salad kit
hot dogs
no-bean canned chili
LOTS of canned green beans (her fave)
chicken broth
canned tuna
LOTS of eggs
string cheese
English cucumbers
margarine (her preference)
The hubs and I spent the last couple of days lobbying every official we could think of to close area schools. Yesterday I wrote the governor. Apparently many others did, too, because today he declared a statewide school closure for 2 months. Relieved this move may help “flatten the curve” as they say.
As we’re also self-isolating as of Thursday this week, we have a LOT of cooking in our future. It feels so weird to know that no, we won’t be going…anywhere. No meals out but #worthit.
Two of the guys on my crew knit scarves and beanies. Helps with drum dexterity. .
Your MIL, has angels for a DIL and son. So nice of you to do that for her. These are unprecedented times for most of us, in our lifetimes. I do remember older relatives talking about the polio terror in the 40’s and 50’s - scary times for those folks. I also remember them talking occasionally about the “Spanish” flu, although that didn’t occur in their day.
I’ve tried several times without success. My wife is a very fast and capable knitter and I have had the discussion many times. As a yachtsman I can tie a lot of knots, some quite obscure but can’t knit (essentially row on row of knots). She knits like a demon but can’t tie a bowline.
Brb. Packing to move into your house! You will barely notice us. I’ll leave a bottle of something bubbly in the fridge!
You two have a big heart.
The first few rows are never enjoyable. When teaching someone to knit or crochet, I give them a swatch that already has enough rows that the newbie has something to hold onto and to serve as a guide. It’s easier to learn to create the initial rows once you are comfortable making stitches.
My wife tried that with me. That’s how her mother taught her to knit. I still messed it up. I may well try again, perhaps if we lose Internet. We’ll see. Perhaps I’d just as well go to bed and pull the covers over my head.
There are lots of interesting and useful knots and even more silly ones. There are about five I use regularly and a dozen or so I remember exist and have to look up to tie. Ashley’s Book of Knots is the defacto bible. Some are quite pretty and still have some moderate functional value. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_decorative_knots . The Turk’s head for example is commonly used to mark the position of a ship’s wheel for the position of center rudder. Some are used for non-skid - those overlap with doily work, not a surprise given history. In a feeble attempt to maintain some semblance of connection to the HO mission I can throw a lacing on a roast pretty fast. grin
I’m watching the news now . . . the state liquor stores are indeed closing by Tuesday at the latest. I’ll make a whiskey/vodka run today, but I imagine it will be a zoo and I’ll have to be flexible regarding brands
In the UK, the health minister has announced that “in a few weeks”, new regulations will require those over 70 and those with vulnerable health conditions (that’s bound to include us) to self isolate, possibly for a period of three months. Self isolation will mean exactly that - stay at home, making arrangements for food & medicine deliveries. Leaving aside the social issues of isolation, this is going to be very difficult in practice.
We’ll set up a home delivery account with our usual supermarket and will have to rely on that and, probably, the efforts of younger & fitter members of the extended family. But the home delivery service is going to be overwhelmed if there is a massive increase in customer use. They have finite numbers of food “pickers” collating orders, delivery staff and vehicles. And this without the obvious issues affecting elderly people who may not have internet access and therefore be unable to place orders.
Three months! There aren’t enough Trivial Pursuit questions to sustain that.
Stage 3 plan of Coronavirus starts today. Heard that last night restaurants were full, since starting today, nobody should be out on the street except for food shops or health reason. Well, the most irrational thing is the municipal election wasn’t cancelled today.
