Ha! Read this while eating after-dinner unsweetened greek yogurt to complete today’s protein grams. I find getting enough challenging.
There is actually a lot of evidence that fat restriction including saturated does not improve cardiovascular disease risk especially if replaced with carbohydrates.
My cholesterol is over 320, my LDL is in the high 200s but my triglycerides are low and my HDL is high ever since liw carbing.
My new primary doctor is also a cardiologist in addition to a PCP. We started out with an echocardiogram and carotid artery Imaging. Now despite the fact that I take after the side of my family that all died of complications of diabetes like congestive heart failure and kidney failure before the age of 40 you would think after 22 years on a ketogenic diet that vastly lowered my heart attack risk I would have had some sort of plaque in my arteries. I had no thickening of the walls I had no blockages I did not have significant plaque and where I did it was primarily the stable kind that doesn’t cause issues. Just saying. I haven’t needed any diabetic meds either all these decades thanks to the diet change I made. It took me years to love it but I immediately loved the benefits if not the flavors. And I’m the same age as old people now. ![]()
Besides finding new recipes you like, how did you do with your other aspirations?
Looking at my OP, I’ve failed on all counts. This year was a bit too… distracting to focus on my goals ![]()
There’s always 2026.
I have enjoyed watching you reach new heights with your pizzas, John
Surprisingly, I’ve stuck with these goals this year.
I’ve made more salads than ever, and I’ve been ordering more vegetarian meals when dining out.
I’ve been keeping most of my solo dining take-out breakfasts and lunches to under $30 CAD.
I used to eat out around 6 times each weekend, from Thursday to Sunday, including most of my weekend meals , before 2020, and typically maybe 8 times a week.
I am now dining out around 2 or 3 times a week, and cooking more dinners when I’m solo. I’m also saving more doggy bags from restaurant meals, stretching those meals into 2 meals.
Umm…maybe not as much as I should have.
Even though my most recent checkup got a “If I didn’t have your chart in front of me and know you have 3 stents, I’d never know that you had a heart attack!” from my cardiologist. I keep looking at the cookbooks I bought after getting home and thinking “I really need to use them more often”…and then don’t.
I’ve been trying to have more seafood - and I do love most of it. I just don’t buy it as often as I should (other than shrimp or scallops). So I need to do that. I prefer Wegmans’ seafood counter, but that’s a bit more than a stop on the way home from work for me. So maybe I’ll just go to the more local Whole Foods that IS on the way home from work and pick up more seafood there.
I’m probably best with this. Also, I’ve definitely been doing smaller portions about 80% of the time, and not always the meat/starch/veg plate. Sometimes just the meat/veg.
Exactly two 'cues with the Primo, so I wouldn’t say we’ve completely figured it out. We’ve not tried to make pizza OR smoke anything on the grill.
Our HK/Singapore trip over the upcoming holidays had to be cancelled due to lack of funds. That’s a major disappointment, but we kinda blew our load on our Sicily trip & Berlin summer sojourn, not to mention stupid but necessary house repairs, and stupid medical bills.
Nailed it!
Unfortunately, I was forced to prepare whatever I could find on sale/clearance. I was able to find some vegetables on clearance and turn them into something, but there was quite a bit of pork and chicken served.
As for staying on budget – I did a pretty good job at that goal and there was a fair bit of variety in our meals. I was actually talking to Sunshine about variety (the other night) and she seemed content that I didn’t repeat dishes too often.
I also have the Hungry Onion posters to thank for ideas in the “tracking expenses” thread. Using your ideas and some YouTube videos helped to make some really nice (and inexpensive) meals.
I continued to cut back on excessive-ness. I did not, however, get very far with my omelette-ing. But! I have successfully maintained a sourdough starter and used it for a great many things. I still have “make cheese” in the back of my mind. (Not, like, ricotta. I know I can do that. Complicated cheese!)
Continue with getting organized, learn to make hard cheese, master baguettes and croissants, grow some food. Now, if only someone else would do the housekeeping…
Well, the organization still didn’t happen and I didn’t learn to make hard cheese, but the baguettes and croissants (though not mastered) are looking pretty good and I had a nice variety of herbs and cherry tomatoes on the deck. Still looking for someone else to do the housekeeping…
Goal achieved of actually keeping 25 excess pounds off, yearly doc checkup results were fine. 71st birthday in January, so entering another decade in good health bolstered by microplastics and artificial sweeteners. ![]()
