Cookbook sale, Sat 11 April, 12-4 pm [Curio Spice, Cambridge MA]

I just read about a cookbook sale that a BU prof is holding at Curio Spice on Saturday, 11 April, 12-4 pm. Prices are $5–$10 each and all proceeds go to World Central Kitchen (I personally think she could charge more and people would willingly pay…she must have a big enough inventory to generate substantial proceeds).

I’ll be in RI, but I thought other Greater Boston Onions might be interested. For those unfamiliar with the North Cambridge location, it’s a neat little block of food shops (and surrounding ones, too) which makes for a fun field trip.

What an inspired idea. The article says the professor gathered more than 500 cookbooks for the sale from her own collection and from others.

Thanks for the post. I wish I would have known. I’m downsizing and could have contributed a few hundred to the cause myself. Hope they get a great turnout.

Anyone know if there’s a way to contribute? I also just sorted through my collection, and pulled at least a few dozen, most of which are in like-new condition. They’re sitting in a pile in my basement awaiting pickup with a bunch of other stuff I’m getting rid of. I would much rather they get sold for a good cause!

FWIW, if your town’s library does book sales, that can be a great place to rehome books you no longer need including cookbooks. The library book sales in my town raise an impressive amount of funding for community programs that way.

You can also donate to More Than Words, a non profit that trains disadvantaged young adults to run their bookstores.

This looks great, thank you!

Thank you for this suggestion, @Madrid! Although I did have to put in the word “nonprofit” in the search for it to come up. Otherwise, all I could find was the song by Extreme.

I haven’t been on Felton Street in Waltham in ages (used to go to several antique stores there; now there’s only the downstairs one). Google Street Maps shows a LOT of changes!

Bryn Mawr bookstore (on Huron Ave in Cambridge, MA, right across the street from Formaggio Kitchen) would love your book donations!

The store is staffed by volunteers. Proceeds from sales are used to provide financial assistance for scholarships and internships to Bryn Mawr students who meet need guidelines, and all profits go to the College.

In the past they were picky about what they would accept. I have taken them books and had them reject several.

That is true, but their website is pretty clear about what they will and won’t accept. They will take cookbooks, but condition matters as does resaleability

Yes, you can just drop everything off at a library but be aware that they also end up putting a lot of donations into recycling boxes due to condition or lack of interest.

The issue for me – the mileage of others might be different (TMOOMBD – boy, do I have a ear for a catchy acronym) – was that after schlepping boxes of books to them, having them examined tediously one by one, I had to schlepp stuff back and look for alternate places. I speak from boxes of experience.

I’d rather a depository that I can give stuff to and let them handle what they consider detritus.

Also, TMOOMBD, I think the City of Cambridge a worthier cause than Bryn Mawr.

More Than Words will schedule a pick up and their website explains what they will take. I don’t know what they do with stuff they pick up and later determine not to keep, but they are a larger operation for a good cause with several locations. The Bryn Mawr bookshop is really small in comparison.

And it is true that libraries get donations they decide to dispose of rather than try to sell. Might be better to contact the specific library to ask if they are accepting donations and if so, what they want.

Agreed. My local library is rather strict in what they accept. They say they accept items in “EXCELLENT condition such as books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks”. Anything they don’t add get put into a “Friends of the XYZ LIbrary” honor book sale, and if in poor condition, they are discarded or recycled. They also do NOT accept boxes of donations of encyclopedias, textbooks, yearbooks, damaged items, media items without the original cases, VHS tapes, out of date items.
