[Colombo, Sri Lanka] The Garden Café at Barefoot, Galle Road

Sri Lankan artist/designer, Barbara Sansoni’s vibrant creations have always fascinated me, and her beautiful 55-year-old store on Galle Road, Barefoot, not only has a splendid range of her retail products, but also one of Colombo’s must-visit eateries - the Garden Café, an oasis of calm on busy Galle Road. On the day we were there, there was also an exhibition of the paintings of another renowned Sri Lankan artist, Laki Senanayake.

The Garden Café, where we had a light, unfussy lunch atypical of Sri Lanka, but very much expected in this artsy-fartsy spot.

  1. Grilled Modha fish with vegetables & potato wedges.

  2. Garlic prawns with oyster sauce and coriander. This dish tasted almost Chinese, akin to the Sino-Ludhianvi cooking of India.

Relatively mild flavours by Sri Lankan standards. But this place is truly a gem of a dining spot with its quiet, calm setting and simple, no-fuss cooking using quality ingredients.

Looks wonderful!

Senayake’s work is somewhat reminiscent (to me) of Gauguin, but bigger and brighter, though. Love it.
