looking for quality roasters in Manhattan south of CP.
Or in BK, Wburg or west of PP.
Roaster of beans. Preferably, where they have medium roast African beans.
Not blends.
Not sure if this is the type of thing you’re looking for, but I’ve had coffee at their Dumbo Brooklyn Roastery location:
no, but thanks the same
They have moved their roaster to Hoboken, but this is still where I get my beans, and I am mostly happy with it: https://www.kobricks.com/
But if you find someplace actually roasting still in the city, I’d be curious to try!
Parlor Coffee in Brooklyn.
Porto Rico. 2 Manhattan locations (East and West Village) and their roasting operation is in Brooklyn. Been around sine 1907, and I’ve been getting beans there since the late 90s. Their staff is quite knowledgeable too.
Their selection of African beans:
Here’s some good lists and descriptions of each. Had no idea there were so many roasters in NYC.
Kobricks seems to be all blends. Not for me, but thanks.
at $40/lb that’s a bit steep and probably the difference for my palate from Knappogue 16 vs 21.
But thanks.
forgot about Porto Rico. I’ll have to drop by. Thanks.
Iluvcookies too.
especially from BK & BX Italian bakeries.
Biscotti, mmmmmmm
or ones I make.
Many of those on Insurrection are coffee shops not so much roasters.
Bean Around is a tighter list. Thanks for that.
I used to go to Joe regularly when I worked in Chelsea.
With a $10k Italian made pro machine and a barista that pays attention probably helps with blends.
Stumptown is a Portland company. They do sell their beans locally, though. ~$30/lb.
Used to go to Gimme at the BK location, which I think is gone now.
Counter Culture is used at a number of shops in NYC that also sell their beans. Quite good especially the Hologram blend, which I normally am not a fan of.
Intelligencia is very good and also very $$$.
I’ve heard Sey is good, but at $45/lb, twice what I’ve paid for a former coffee exchange traders goods. Which are quite consistent. But trying to support more local businesses.
I also used to go to 9th St when I worked in Chelsea. Blend w/$10k machine.
Dunno how Blue Bottle got the rep it has. The shops are so poorly attended I wouldn’t even try their beans.
Some others to try though.
I just googled “coffee roasters nyc”. Lots popped up.
Stumptown roasts in Brooklyn and all their packages of beans carry the roasting date. In my neighborhood (Prospect Heights/Park Slope both the Union Market chain and Hungry Ghost carry their beans (and the latter serves their coffee, which is good. We havent tried all their offerings (they do have Ethiopian) but the Guatemala medium is very good.
There seem to be a lot of coffee roasters now, producing a high cost product (some well over $20 a pound) . Out in Columbus Ohio at the moment and their are multiple local roasters selling high priced stuff at a local fine foods store. Have to ask whether the price/value ratio is there.
“Have to ask whether the price/value ratio is there.”
exactly. My current roaster is at $22/lb.
Some are that much for 12z. As I said, ~$30/lb.
Lettuce at WF.
Came to say this. I think they roast in northeast williamsburg. There are a few roasters by me in Queens but don’t know if they are single or blend. There’s also Stone Street in Gowanus.
Thanks. Stone Street looks good.
$38/lb. Thanks the same,
