Classic British dishes - fake or fact

Yeah, I have had my fair share of these when I briefly lived in the UK.

I would love to eat more classic british dishes, but they weren’t exactly easy to find in central London, where i lived at the time.

I think they are due a comeback in more British restaurants. We have some lovely pies. My late mother in law may have been the UK’s worst home cook. She could burn anything. But she used to make the most flavoursome cheese and onion pie. OK, the pastry was overly thick but the taste was fantastic.

“Scotch eggs - including a black pudding one, where the pudding replaces the usual sausage meat”

Some people know how to live, and are living very well.

I’ve had a Scotch egg made with cod instead of sausage, which was very good.

I didn’t make a toad-in-the-hole until the pandemic.

Still haven’t made a Spotted Dick.
I’m going to use the article as a bucket list.

I first had a fish based Scotch egg back in June 2010 at this lovely place in the North Wales coastal village of Abersoch. They had only been open for six weeks (and it’s good to see they are still going strong) but I know it stayed on the menu for some years after. Then it used smoked haddock, wrapped round the egg. And, spot on for seasonality, served asparagus spears alongside for dunking in the yolk.
