Christmas 2024 — Whatcha makin'?

I’ll be OK. I’ve not driven at night since my hospitalization, and one of the meds I’m now on gives me slightly (very slightly) fuzzy vision. Not enough to not drive, but headlights might exacerbate it, especially those damn LED headlights. I’ll stick with the slow lane to avoid the oncoming traffic lights on 495N.

Please consider Uber….

I don’t Uber or Lyft, as I’ve never had a reason to living in the 'burbs. :woman_shrugging: If I’m concerned enough about it, my sister can drive me home and her husband will follow to then bring her home.

This is the wine (the shop was sold out but it’s coming back in stock in 2025).

Linda - please don’t drive. You shouldnt risk lights exacerbating the fuzzy vision.

As for Casa Harters, the update at 17.30 GMT… ham (for tomorrow evening and onwards is finishing off in the oven. with a honey & mustard gl;aze. Trifle (Mum’s recipe as always) is half made ready for finishing tomorrow for the evening and onwards. Carrots & spuds for lunch tomorrow are peeled and sitting in water.

Next job is to get stuff out of the freezer for tomorrow. And then we can cook tonight’s dinner. Nigel Slater’s terrine with pickles. Fresh and smoked salmon, beetroot and potato bake - https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/gratin-fresh-smoked-salmon-beetroot-potatoes-dill . That’s with cabbage - all very North European. Followed by cheese and then fruit compote

the line was about 40 deep at the bakery and 50 deep at the fishmonger as they opened. glad i arrived first thing. provisions acquired. all in all, a 90 minute wait in total was not too onerous. on track.

My PIC was toasting sugar in the oven for the pistachio ice cream. At 350. Oops.

Almost looks like an art project

He toasts some, then steeps toasted and raw pistachios in the cream. Unfortunately, no river of Sicilian pistachio paste runs through it this time, bc we forgot to bring it back up from Philly

Unless I find some on my (hopefully) final grocery run today :crossed_fingers:t2:

Not really “making” anything. Wife and I are splurging on a variety of sashimi offerings this Christmas eve. First photo is from her favorite spot (The one with Chutoro, Otoro, Yellowtail, Salmon, Uni, Ikura and Squid Salad) and the second is from my new favorite place that offers dry aged fish (Buri, Shima Aji, and Kinmedai).

Ok, I woke up convinced I wasn’t sick, just tired from the travel.

This morning I went to the butcher first thing to pick up my specially-ordered chuck roast. This butcher shop is very dear to me and I am a valued customer, so when they put TWO pieces of meat in front of me (rather than the single roast I ordered,) they saw my fallen expression and miraculously found a beautiful (single) piece of meat that met my expectations. Also, everyone in the shop was dressed like an elf or Santa, which was very charming.

So the enormous roast has been in for four hours now. Once it was tender, the veg went in and it will all cook slowly til the veg are ready.

To start, a huge charc board I will make, including some of the local cheeses we’ve all come to enjoy. Then a salad made with lettuces I’ve managed to keep growing in pots since the summer (pots currently live in the garage), the pot roast as a main, and for dessert, I bowed to pressure not to make yet another new sweet. It will be a homemade cookie platter served with peppermint bark ice cream.

I changed the dessert to tiramisu to make use of some things I had on hand. Then my husband suggested today that we just go out for dumplings instead of messing up the kitchen before tomorrow. I agreed! I think we will still have the dessert I made.

My MIL will be visiting and I am looking forward to spending time together and enjoying good food and drink.

Just about to make myself a Kir Royale – I figure 4:00 is late enough :upside_down_face::rofl:

Well that was delicious. Was pretty happy especially with that apple drink; was definitely the least sweet iteration of this kind of beverage I’ve been able to find.

My Christmas Eve dinner - the TNT Pigs’ Tails and Octopus Tentacles from Offal Good by Chris Cosentino. Possibly one of the most decadent things I may have ever made and eaten. So, much crispy fat and skin…

Tomorrow will just be me and mom and she wants Chinese American take out. I am ok with this.

I’m doing the same. Christmas morning ham is a must. I’m at work right now, so I’ll be tired. I already have the ham made. Just have to throw some eggs, tators, and sauces together, and we’ll enjoy the morning together.

We did pecan pie and ice cream for thnxgivin, so I’m sure my kids will ask for the repeat performance. Miles ahead of 'em. Gotta warm that pie!
