I think I’m used to Wor Won Ton, which is hard to find in Toronto, and the type of won ton soup served in Chinatown, at House of Gourmet, is relatively anemic, compared to Wor Won Ton. Wor Won Ton was what I grew up with, and what I order in Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary and California. It’s hard to find in Toronto.
So I finally tried the shrimp wonton soup at Swatow after you recommending it . He wanted shrimp and eggplant, one of our Swatow go-tos, so I said ok but let’s try that soup. Verdict: rice dish reliably good, soup a hit. The breakdown: soup base nicer than house of gourmet (whose broth was better in the original owner’s day), enjoyed the addition of bok choy, noodles not as abundant as HoG (a good thing - I’ve often asked them to halve the amount) and the dumpling not as good (HoG adds pork into theirs - maybe I ordered the wrong one?) and not as tender. However, all in all I liked the soup and would order again. Thanks, all
There are two noodle soups with shrimp dumplings at Swatow: shrimp won ton and shrimp dumpling. I believe it is the shrimp won ton that has pork and shrimp and the shrimp dumpling has just shrimp. So I am puzzled if the shrimp won ton has no pork in it. Maybe I am remembering wrongly.
The fried noodle dishes are very enjoyable - pretty much any of them. We also really like the shrimp and scrambled egg on rice.
A ski friend alway used to order the shrimp and scrambled egg on rice after skiing, at a Congee Queen location north of the 401. There was a year about 8 years ago where we did Après Ski Chinese almost weekly at CenterPoint Mall.
